The Superfish Air Stone, when used with an air pump, plays a crucial role in aquarium maintenance. It breaks the air provided by the pump into a fine stream of bubbles, maximising the surface area available for gas exchange. This process helps increase the levels of dissolved oxygen in the water, which is essential for your fish, and aids in driving harmful gases like carbon dioxide out of the tank.

Installation and Setup

Follow these steps to ensure your air stone operates effectively:

Step 1: Prepare the Air Stone

For the best results and the finest initial bubble stream, it is highly recommended to soak the air stone overnight in a container of water before use. This allows the porous stone material to become fully saturated and ensures an even release of bubbles.

Step 2: Connect the Tubing

1. Connect one end of your flexible air tubing (sold separately) to the outlet nozzle of your air pump.
2. Connect the other end of the air tubing securely to the inlet nozzle on the air stone. Ensure the connection is snug to prevent leaks.

Step 3: Placement in the Aquarium

1. If you wish to position the air stone at the bottom of the tank, use a small, discreet suction cup (if provided or available) to secure the stone to the substrate or glass base. The air stone must remain stationary for a consistent bubble pattern.
2. You may need to use a non-return check valve (sold separately) in the air tubing. This is crucial for safety and must be fitted between the air pump and the air stone to prevent water from siphoning back into the pump during a power cut.

Step 4: Start the Pump

1. Position the air pump outside and above the water level if possible, or use a check valve.
2. Plug in and switch on the air pump. After a brief delay, air should begin to flow through the tubing and exit the air stone as a stream of fine bubbles.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance

Routine Care

The porous material of the air stone will naturally become blocked over time, resulting in larger, fewer, or weaker bubbles. For optimal performance, you should plan to replace your Superfish air stone every $3$ to $6$ months, or whenever the bubble output noticeably diminishes.
