The Apistogramma panduro is a highly sought-after dwarf cichlid species from the Ucayali river basin in Peru. Named after the Peruvian fish collectors who discovered them, Panduro are closely related to A. nijsseni. They are famous for their stunning sky-blue scales, the female’s striking black markings, and their complex social behaviours.

Water Chemistry: The Soft Water Challenge

Unlike hardier fish species, the Apistogramma panduro is a “soft-water” specialist. In many parts of the UK (particularly the South East), tap water is too alkaline for this species to thrive or breed.

• Reverse Osmosis (RO): To keep Panduro successfully, many British keepers use RO water remineralised to a very low level.
• pH Levels: They require acidic conditions, ideally between 5.0 and 6.0 for breeding, though they can be kept at 6.5 for general maintenance.
• Hardness: They need very soft water (GH1-5 and KH0-2).
• Tannins: The use of Indian Almond Leaves (Catappa), alder cones, or peat filtration is highly recommended. These release humic acids which naturally lower pH and provide the “blackwater” tint these fish prefer.

Aquarium Setup & Decor

Panduro are cave spawners and bottom-dwellers that appreciate a complex, “busy” environment to feel secure.

• Substrate: Sand is essential. Apistogramma are “earth-eaters”; they sift sand through their gills to find food. Coarse gravel can damage their delicate gill membranes and prevent natural foraging behaviour.
• Cave Sites: Provide multiple small caves using terracotta pots, coconut shells, or bogwood crevices. The entrance should be just large enough for the female to enter.
• Leaf Litter: A thick layer of dried leaves on the substrate provides hiding places for fry and a home for “infusoria” (microscopic food sources).
• Filtration: They dislike strong currents. A well-matured external canister filter with a spray bar directed at the glass, or a large air-driven sponge filter, works best.

Diet and Nutrition

Panduro can be finicky eaters and often refuse dry flakes or pellets initially.

• Live & Frozen Foods: Their diet should be centred on Frozen Bloodworm, White Mosquito Larvae, Artemia (Brine Shrimp), and Daphnia.
• Live Food: Offering live foods is often the only way to “condition” a pair for breeding.
• Caution: Avoid overfeeding, as they are susceptible to internal infections if kept in poor water conditions with high organic waste.

Social Dynamics and Breeding

Pair Bonding

Unlike many other Apistogramma species that are harem-breeders (one male to many females), A. panduro is generally monogamous. They form strong pair bonds. It is best to buy a confirmed pair or a group of juveniles and let them pair off naturally.

Breeding Behaviour

When ready to spawn, the female will turn a vibrant lemon yellow with deep black blotches on her side and face.

1. The Spawn: Eggs are laid on the ceiling of a cave.
2. Maternal Care: The female is the primary guardian, often becoming extremely aggressive toward any tank mates (and sometimes even the male) during this time.
3. Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, the female will lead them around the tank in a tight cloud. They should be fed freshly hatched Brine Shrimp Nauplii.

Health and Maintenance

• Nitrate Sensitivity: Panduro are extremely sensitive to nitrate levels. Weekly water changes of 10-15% are vital, but ensure the new water is chemically identical to the tank water to avoid pH shock.
• Dwarf Cichlid Bloat: Often caused by stress or poor diet. Maintaining low pH and high water quality is the best preventative measure.
