Balloon Electric Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a highly sought-after and visually stunning dwarf cichlid in the aquarium hobby. This unique fish is a selectively bred variation of the Electric Blue Ram, which in turn is a colour morph of the German Blue Ram. It is instantly recognisable by its exceptionally vibrant, metallic blue colour and its distinctive, rounded ‘balloon’ body shape. While a beautiful addition to a peaceful community tank, their sensitive nature means they are best suited for more experienced aquarists.

Appearance & Origin

The Balloon Electric Blue Ram shares the iridescent blue body and fins of its parent strain, the Electric Blue Ram. Its most notable characteristic is the compressed, spherical body shape, which is a result of selective breeding. This physical trait, while giving it a cute and unique look, can sometimes affect its swimming and internal health. These fish originate from the soft, acidic waters of Venezuela and Colombia. They are relatively small, reaching a maximum adult size of approximately $5$ cm ($2$ inches).

Tank Requirements

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 80 litres is recommended for a pair. A larger tank is always better, especially for a small group or for housing them in a community tank.
• Water Parameters:
  • Temperature: 26−29∘C (79−84∘F) is crucial. They thrive in warmer water than many other tropical fish.
  • pH: $5.5-7.0$ (Slightly acidic is preferred, as this mimics their natural habitat).
  • Hardness: Soft water is essential.
• Filtration & Water Changes: Excellent filtration is vital, but the water flow should be gentle. These fish are very sensitive to water quality, so frequent, small water changes (around 20-25% weekly) are highly recommended to keep nitrates low and the water pristine.
• Substrate & Décor: A fine sand substrate is ideal to protect their delicate mouths as they sift for food. The tank should be heavily planted and decorated with plenty of hiding places, such as caves, driftwood, and rocks. A dim lighting setup can help them feel more secure and bring out their colours.

Diet & Feeding

The Balloon Electric Blue Ram is a micro-predator in the wild, so it requires a protein-rich diet. They are omnivores but primarily carnivorous.

• Primary Diet: A high-quality flake or micro-pellet food for small carnivores.
• Supplements: Offer a variety of frozen and live foods to supplement their diet, such as daphnia, bloodworms, and brine shrimp. This not only provides essential nutrients but also helps to condition them for breeding.

Tank Mates & Compatibility

These fish are peaceful and should not be housed with aggressive or boisterous tank mates. Due to their distinctive body shape, they are not as fast as other fish and can be easily outcompeted for food or harassed.

• Suitable Tank Mates: Peaceful, mid-to-top dwelling fish like small Tetras (Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras), Corydoras catfish, Rasboras, and Dwarf Gouramis.
• Incompatible Tank Mates: Avoid large, aggressive cichlids, Barbs, and other fast-moving, fin-nipping fish. It’s also best to avoid keeping them with other cichlid species that may be territorial.

Health & General Care

Due to their selective breeding, Balloon Rams can be more susceptible to health issues and stress. It is crucial to acclimate them slowly and provide the ideal water conditions mentioned above. Monitor their behaviour and appetite closely, as any changes can be an early indicator of stress or disease. Always ensure their food is sinking and they are not being outcompeted at feeding time.
