The Black Ram Cichlid is a specially bred colour morph of the widely popular Ram Cichlid, originating from the Orinoco River basin in South America. They are cherished for their unique, deep velvet black colouration that often covers the entire body and fins, making them a stunning centrepiece fish. Like all Rams, they are sensitive fish that require extremely stable and pristine water conditions to thrive.

Key Characteristics and Temperament

• Size: Males typically reach $6\text{ cm}$ ($\approx 2.4\text{ inches}$); females are slightly smaller.
• Appearance: They possess the classic Ram shape, but their distinctive feature is the expansive melanistic (black) pigmentation across the body, often retaining hints of the traditional blue, gold, or red in the fins.
• Temperament: They are peaceful and shy, belonging to the dwarf cichlid family. They are not aggressive towards most other fish but will become intensely territorial over a specific area (a rock or cave) if they are preparing to spawn.
• Recommended Grouping: Best kept as a single, bonded pair. They can sometimes be kept as a male with two females (a trio), but only in larger tanks with plenty of visual barriers.
• Lifespan: $2\text{ to }4$ years, highly dependent on water quality.

Water Parameters and Quality

Rams require soft, warm, and acidic water, mimicking their natural blackwater habitat. They are highly intolerant of nitrates.

• Temperature: 26∘C to 30∘C (79∘F to 86∘F). Stability and warmth are critical.
• pH Level (Acidity): Soft, acidic water is necessary for long-term health, with an ideal range of $5.5$ to $6.5$.
• Hardness ($\text{GH}$): Very soft water is preferred, ideally less than $6\text{ dH}$. Using $\text{RO}$ (reverse osmosis) water mixed with mineral salts is often necessary to achieve these parameters.
• Maintenance: Weekly water changes of $25\%$ to $30\%$ are mandatory to keep nitrate levels as close to zero as possible. Good aeration is also essential.

Aquarium Setup and Environment

A successful Black Ram tank must provide defined territories and a stress-free environment.

• Tank Size: A minimum of $60\text{ litres}$ ($\approx 15\text{ gallons}$) for a single pair. $100\text{ litres}$ or more is preferred for greater water stability.
• Substrate: Fine sand is essential. Rams are sifting fish and enjoy rooting through the substrate for food. Coarse gravel can damage their mouths and gills.
• Filtration and Flow: Use reliable filtration (e.g., a canister or sponge filter) but ensure the flow is gentle. Strong currents can stress these fish.
• Décor: Include large pieces of driftwood and plenty of hiding places such as small caves, coconut shells, or clay pots. The addition of Indian almond leaves and alder cones is highly recommended to release tannins, creating the desired blackwater look and softening the water.
• Lighting: Keep lighting moderate and use floating plants (e.g., Water Lettuce) to create shaded areas.

Diet and Feeding Requirements

Black Rams are omnivores but require high-protein foods to maintain their colouration and overall health.

• Staple Diet: High-quality sinking micro-pellets or flakes specifically designed for dwarf cichlids.
• Protein Supplements: This is the most important part of their diet. They should receive live or frozen foods daily, such as bloodworms, brine shrimp (artemia), and daphnia.
• Vegetable Matter: Offer blanched, fresh vegetables occasionally, such as crushed shelled peas or thin slices of courgette (zucchini).
• Feeding Frequency: Feed small portions two to three times per day.

Compatibility

• Suitable Tank Mates: Peaceful, non-territorial, mid-to-upper water column fish are best. Examples include Neon, Cardinal, or Ember Tetras, small Rasboras, and Hatchetfish.
• Avoid: Aggressive cichlids, fin-nippers, or any large bottom-dwelling fish that would compete directly for food or territory (e.g., larger plecos or aggressive loaches).
