The Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is arguably the most famous and visually striking small freshwater fish, originating from the blackwater streams of the Amazon basin. Instantly recognizable by the vivid, neon-like horizontal stripe that runs the full length of its body, this peaceful, shoaling fish requires specific, soft, and acidic water conditions to maintain optimal health and colouration.

V. Compatibility and Shoaling Behaviour
Cardinals are incredibly peaceful and timid. They must be kept in a large shoal to feel secure; a small group will result in them becoming stressed, pale, and hiding permanently.
- Ideal Shoal Size: A large shoal of 15 or more individuals is recommended to see their natural, dazzling schooling behaviour.
- Tank Mates: Suitable tank mates include other small, peaceful, blackwater-tolerant fish, such as Dwarf Cichlids (Apistogramma), pencilfish, Corydoras, small, non-aggressive plecos, and peaceful Rasboras.
- Avoid: Any large, predatory, or overtly aggressive fish. Do not house with fin-nippers (e.g., certain Barbs) or faster, boisterous species that may intimidate them during feeding.
