The Coast Catfish, a member of the Corydoradinae subfamily, is an endearing fish with a streamlined body and a mottled pattern of black or brown spots and blotches over a pale, cream-coloured body. Like all Corydoras, they use their sensory barbels to sift through the substrate for food. They are peaceful and are known for their social behaviour, often seen resting or foraging together.

Ideal Tank Requirements

Creating a suitable habitat for the Coast Catfish is key to their long-term health. A well-maintained tank with appropriate decor and water parameters will allow them to thrive.

• Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of ~$60$ litres ($15$ gallons) is recommended for a small group, with a larger footprint being more important than height.
• Water Parameters:
  • Temperature: A comfortable range of ~$22-26$ °C ($72-79$ °F) is ideal.
  • pH: Neutral to slightly acidic water between ~$6.0-7.2$ is best.
  • Hardness: Soft to medium-soft water is preferred.
• Tank Decor: The aquarium should have a soft, sandy substrate. This is crucial as their delicate barbels can be damaged by coarse gravel, making it difficult for them to forage for food. Decorate the tank with smooth river pebbles, driftwood, and live plants to provide shelter and resting spots. Ensure there are plenty of open areas for them to swim and forage.
• Filtration & Water Flow: A good quality filter is necessary to keep the water clean. They prefer a moderate water flow, so a gentle filter outlet is suitable.

Diet & Feeding

The Coast Catfish is an omnivore and a bottom-dweller, so their diet should consist of a variety of sinking foods. They spend their days sifting through the substrate to find food.

• Primary Diet: A staple diet of high-quality sinking pellets or wafers is recommended.
• Supplements: Supplement their diet with protein-rich foods like live or frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They will also appreciate blanched vegetables occasionally.
• Feeding Frequency: Feed once a day, ensuring the food reaches the bottom of the tank.

• Social Behaviour: Coast Catfish are a shoaling species and should be kept in groups of at least five or more. Keeping them in a group reduces stress and encourages them to display their natural behaviours.
• Tank Mates: They are excellent community fish and can be kept with other peaceful species like small tetras, rasboras, and other small, non-aggressive fish. Avoid keeping them with large or boisterous species that might intimidate them or outcompete them for food.
• Substrate: Again, using a sandy substrate is crucial for their well-being. It is the most important consideration for their habitat.
