Species Care Guide: Dwarf Chain Loach

The Dwarf Chain Loach (Ambastaia sidthimunki) is a small, highly social loach native to Thailand. While once critically endangered in the wild, it is now widely captive-bred for the aquarium trade. Known for their energetic, playful nature and distinctive checkerboard or chain pattern, they are a charming and valuable addition to most peaceful community tanks, especially due to their appetite for small pest snails.

2. Aquarium Requirements

The Dwarf Chain Loach is active and prefers a tank that allows plenty of space for exploration and hiding. They are best kept in a mature, well-filtered aquarium.

• Minimum Tank Size: A 90-Litre (approx. 20 Imperial Gallons) tank is the minimum for a shoal. They are very active and appreciate longer tanks (75cm+).
• Filtration: Use robust filtration to ensure high water quality. While they appreciate highly oxygenated water, ensure the flow is not too strong in the main swimming areas.
• Substrate: A soft, sandy substrate is mandatory. Loaches love to bury themselves partly in the sand and sift through it for food. Coarse gravel can damage their delicate barbels, leading to infection.
• Decor and Scaping:
  • Hiding Spots: Provide plenty of caves, driftwood, smooth rocks, and ceramic pipes. They love tight spaces where they can squeeze together, often looking like they are sleeping in a pile.
  • Planting: They appreciate dense planting, but ensure open areas remain for active swimming.
  • Lighting: Standard aquarium lighting is fine, but they are often more active in dimmer conditions.

Dwarf Chain Loaches are somewhat sensitive to poor water quality, especially high nitrates. Consistency is more important than achieving specific extremes.

4. Diet and Feeding

These loaches are opportunistic feeders and are known for their efficiency as snail controllers. A varied diet is crucial to ensure they get all necessary nutrients.

• Snail Control: They are excellent at controlling small pest snails (like Ramshorn or Bladder Snails).
• Staple Diet: High-quality, sinking pellets or tablets designed for bottom feeders.
• Protein Supplement: Offer live or frozen foods regularly, such as bloodworms, tubifex, Daphnia, and brine shrimp.
• Vegetable Matter: Supplement their diet with blanched vegetables like courgette, shelled peas, and spinach.
• Feeding Schedule: Feed once or twice daily, ensuring the food reaches the bottom where they forage. They are often most active and feed eagerly in the late afternoon or evening.

5. Compatibility and Group Dynamics

The Dwarf Chain Loach is one of the most peaceful loaches and an ideal community fish.

• Shoaling is Mandatory: This species is an obligate shoaling fish. They will become highly stressed, shy, sickly, and may even exhibit aggressive behaviour towards other fish if kept alone or in too small a group. A minimum shoal of 6 individuals is essential, but 10 or more is highly recommended.
• Ideal Tank Mates:
  • Community Fish: Almost all small to medium, peaceful fish such as Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras, peaceful Barbs, and smaller Gouramis.
  • Other Loaches: They can mix well with other peaceful loach species, such as Kuhli Loaches.
• Avoid:
  • Aggressive Cichlids: Anything large or aggressive that might harass or injure them.
  • Fish with Long Fins: Fin-nippers are usually fine, but avoid fish that might nip the loaches’ barbels.

The Dwarf Chain Loach’s habit of piling up together to sleep is one of the most endearing sights in the aquarium hobby!
