Gold Saum (Andinoacara rivulatus):

It is important to note that for many years, this fish was confused with Andinoacara stalsbergi (the “True” Green Terror or Silver Saum). However, the Gold Saum is the variety most commonly encountered by British aquarists, celebrated for its brilliant orange-gold fin margins.

Physical Characteristics

The Gold Saum is a powerhouse of a fish. Its body is covered in iridescent, metallic green and blue scales that shimmer against a dark, olive-brown base.

• The “Saum”: The hallmark of this species is the thick, fiery orange or gold border on the dorsal and caudal (tail) fins.

• The Face: They possess intricate “war paint” markings—electric blue worm-like patterns across the snout and gill covers.

• Sexual Dimorphism: Males are significantly larger and, as they mature, often develop a pronounced nuchal hump (a fatty lump on the forehead). Females are smaller, darker, and generally lack the hump.

Aquarium Requirements

The “Fortress” Setup

Because these fish are both large and powerful, your aquascaping needs to be “industrial grade.”

• Substrate: Sand or fine gravel. Gold Saums love to dig, especially when breeding, so ensure your hardscape is sitting on the glass bottom rather than on top of the sand to prevent collapses.

• Decor: Large pieces of Bogwood and heavy rocks are ideal. They provide visual barriers which are essential for managing aggression.

• Plants: Unless you use robust epiphytes like Anubias or Java Fern securely tied to wood, don’t expect plants to survive. Most rooted plants will be uprooted within hours of “remodelling” by the fish.

Water Parameters

Interestingly, the Gold Saum prefers slightly cooler water than many other South American cichlids.

• Temperature: 20°C – 24°C (68°F – 75°F). Higher temperatures can lead to increased aggression and a shorter lifespan.

• pH: 6.5 – 8.0.

• Hardness: Soft to Medium-Hard (5 – 20 dGH).

• Filtration: These are messy eaters. Heavy-duty filtration is required to handle the bioload and keep nitrates low.

Diet and Nutrition

The Gold Saum is a greedy omnivore with a distinct preference for high-protein fare.

• Staple: High-quality cichlid pellets or sticks.

• Fresh/Frozen: They should be fed a variety of chopped prawns, mussels, earthworms, and bloodworms.

• Vegetable Matter: Occasionally offer blanched peas or spirulina flakes to ensure a balanced diet and prevent digestive issues like “Hole-in-the-Head” disease.

Behaviour and Compatibility

The “Terror” name is earned, but usually only in cramped quarters. They are territorial “tank bosses” who will not tolerate intruders in their perceived space.

Potential Tank Mates: If you have a very large tank (500+ litres), you can keep them with other robust South American or Central American cichlids, such as:

• Oscars or Jack Dempseys.

• Large Loricariids (Common Plecos or Sailfin Plecos).

• Large, fast-moving “target fish” like Silver Dollars, which can distract the Gold Saum without being caught.

Avoid: Small community fish like the Flame Tetra or Hoplisoma, which will be eaten or bullied relentlessly.

A Note on Personality: > Like many large cichlids, Gold Saums are incredibly “personable.” They will quickly learn who feeds them, often following their owner’s movements outside the glass. Many keepers consider them “wet pets” due to their high level of interaction and distinct individual characters.
