Chang Ting Hillstream Loach (Labidogastromyzon changtingensis) is a captivating and unique freshwater fish, though it is sometimes also referred to as the Chinese Hillstream Loach or Butterfly Loach. Hailing from the fast-flowing, oxygen-rich mountain streams of China, this loach has a highly specialised, flattened body that allows it to cling to rocks in powerful currents. This distinct adaptation, along with its broad, wing-like pectoral fins, gives it a unique appearance reminiscent of a miniature ray.

Key Characteristics

• Size: This is a small species, typically reaching a maximum length of 6-8 cm (2.4-3.1 inches).
• Appearance: The most distinctive feature is its flattened, streamlined body. It has a broad head and a sucker-like mouth that it uses to hold on to surfaces. Its colouration consists of a beautiful, intricate pattern of dark blotches and spots over a lighter tan or golden background, which provides exceptional camouflage.
• Temperament: They are exceptionally peaceful and non-aggressive, making them a wonderful addition to a community tank. They are bottom-dwellers and are not known to bother other species.

Tank Requirements

Providing the right environment is critical for the health of Hillstream Loaches. Replicating their natural habitat is key.

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended for a small group. A larger tank is always better to provide ample surface area for them to graze.
• Water Parameters: They require very clean, highly oxygenated water with a strong current.
  • Temperature: $18-24°C$ ($64-75°F$)
  • pH: $6.5-7.5$
  • Hardness: $4-10$ dGH
• Tank Setup: A high flow rate is essential. This can be achieved with a powerhead, canister filter, or wavemaker. The substrate should consist of smooth pebbles or fine gravel. Provide plenty of smooth, flat rocks, and driftwood for them to cling to and graze on algae.

Diet

Chang Ting Hillstream Loaches are primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and the biofilm that grows on submerged rocks in the wild.

• Primary Diet: They will graze on algae in the aquarium.
• Supplemental Foods: Their diet must be supplemented with high-quality sinking wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables like cucumber or zucchini. It’s also important to provide some protein, so small live or frozen foods like bloodworms,brine shrimp and Tubifex can be given occasionally.

Behaviour and Tank Mates

These are shoaling fish and must be kept in groups to feel secure and thrive.

• Social Structure: Keep them in groups of at least 3-4 individuals. This will encourage natural social behaviours and reduce any shyness. They will often be seen resting or grazing together.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Their peaceful nature means they can be kept with a wide range of other fish that prefer similar cool, high-oxygen environments. Suitable tank mates include:
  • Other hillstream loaches
  • White Cloud Mountain Minnows
  • Zebra Danios
  • Cherry Shrimp
  • Small, peaceful schooling fish

Breeding

Breeding Chang Ting Hillstream Loaches in an aquarium is very rare. This is due to the very specific conditions required, particularly the high oxygen levels and consistent water flow needed for their eggs to develop.
