Long Fin Red Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is a popular and striking variation of the common Bristlenose Pleco. It is a peaceful, bottom-dwelling catfish, highly valued by aquarists for its algae-eating abilities and its fascinating appearance, with a vibrant reddish-orange body and impressive, elongated fins. Unlike many larger pleco species, this fish remains a manageable size, making it a great choice for smaller to medium-sized aquariums.

Appearance & Origin

The Long Fin Red Bristlenose Pleco is a selectively bred ornamental fish. It shares the same characteristics as the standard Bristlenose Pleco, including the flattened body, suckermouth, and the distinctive “bristles” or fleshy tentacles on the snout of the male. The long-finned variety has flowing, elegant fins that add to its beauty, while the “red” colour morph has a uniform golden-red to deep red hue. These fish are native to the fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters of South America’s Amazon basin.

Tank Requirements

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (around 20 US gallons) is recommended for a single pleco. A larger tank will be needed if you plan to keep more than one.
• Water Conditions:
  • Temperature: 23−27∘C (73−80∘F)
  • pH: $6.5-7.5$ (Slightly acidic to neutral)
  • Hardness: Soft to medium-hard water
• Filtration: These fish produce a lot of waste, so a robust filtration system is essential to maintain high water quality. The tank should be well-oxygenated, with some gentle water flow.
• Substrate & Décor: A smooth substrate, such as fine gravel or sand, is best to protect their delicate fins. The tank should have plenty of hiding spots, including caves, driftwood, and rocks. Driftwood is a crucial element, as it provides a source of wood fibre that is essential for their digestion.

Diet & Feeding

While plecos are excellent algae eaters, they require a varied diet to stay healthy.

• Primary Diet: Algae wafers or sinking pellets specifically designed for bottom-dwellers.
• Supplements: Supplement their diet with fresh vegetables such as zucchini, cucumber, shelled peas, or blanched spinach. You can also offer occasional protein-rich foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp, but be sure to do so sparingly.
• Feeding Habits: Feed once a day, typically in the evening, as they are most active at night. They are not effective at competing for food with other fish, so make sure food reaches them at the bottom of the tank.

Tank Mates & Compatibility

The Long Fin Red Bristlenose Pleco is a peaceful and non-aggressive fish.

• Suitable Tank Mates:
  • Most small to medium-sized community fish that are not aggressive. This includes peaceful tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras catfish, Gouramis, and Mollies.
• Incompatible Tank Mates: Avoid keeping them with aggressive fish that might bully them or species that could nip at their long fins. While they are generally fine with other plecos, you should be mindful of aggression between males if the tank is not large enough to provide them with their own territory.

Breeding

Breeding is straightforward in a well-maintained home aquarium.

• Spawning Site: A male will often claim a cave or a piece of driftwood and guard it. The female will lay her eggs inside the cave, which the male will then fertilise and guard until they hatch.
• Parental Care: The male is a dedicated father, fan-ning the eggs with his fins to provide oxygen. Once the eggs hatch, he will continue to guard the tiny fry.
• Tips: To encourage breeding, provide plenty of caves or PVC pipe sections for them to choose from. A varied diet and excellent water quality are key factors.
