• Swimming Space: Maintain a large, completely unobstructed central swimming lane. These are highly energetic, fast-moving shoaling fish.
• Vegetation: Arrange dense clusters of live plants along the back and sides of the tank. Fine-leaved options such as Java Moss or Vallisneria offer natural shelter and prime spawning sites.
• Substrate & Hardscape: Incorporate dark substrate and organic bogwood roots. A darker backdrop dramatically highlights their iridescent red and blue highlights.
• Security: A tightly fitting aquarium lid is critical. Like most Melanotaenia species, they are exceptional jumpers, particularly when startled or when males are actively chasing one another.

• The Meyado Village Rainbowfish is a greedy, opportunistic omnivore.
• Mouth Size Constraint: Despite their aggressive appetites, they have relatively small, narrow throats. Avoid large, hard pellets that can cause choking or digestive blockages.
• Primary Diet: Offer high-quality “soft” foods including premium flakes, freeze-dried krill, and micro-pellets.
• Live and Frozen Foods: Regular treats of frozen daphnia, Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and mosquito larvae are essential for bringing out the vibrant fiery reds in mature males.

• Shoaling Mechanics: Must be kept in a group of at least 8 to 10 individuals. Keeping them in single pairs or inadequate numbers induces severe stress and reduces their coloration.
• Sex Ratios: Maintain a ratio of one male to every two or three females. Rivalry between males is strictly visual; keeping multiple males encourages spectacular fin-flaring and colour-flashing displays without physical harm.
• Compatible Tank Mates: Excellent candidates include other medium-sized, peaceful community fish. Suitable options include other similarly sized rainbowfish, peaceful tetras (such as Bleeding Heart tetras), Corydoras catfish, peaceful loaches, and mild-mannered dwarf cichlids. Avoid housing them with hyper-aggressive species or slow-moving long-finned fish that could be unnerved by their fast pacing.

• Spawning Triggers: Condition a group heavily with live or frozen foods, and raise the water temperature slightly to stimulate breeding.
• Spawning Action: The dominant male flares his fins and chases the female into dense aquatic vegetation or a synthetic yarn spawning mop. The female deposits a few adhesive eggs daily over several weeks.
• Fry Care: The adults exhibit no parental instincts and will readily consume their own eggs. To raise the fry successfully, remove the egg-laden spawning mops to a separate, mature rearing tank with gentle sponge filtration.
