Guenther’s Hap (Mylochromis guentheri)

• Minimum Tank Size: 350–450 litres (approx. 75–100 gallons). A minimum tank length of 150 cm (5 feet) is recommended due to their active swimming nature.
• Water Temperature: 23°C to 28°C.
• pH Level: 7.5 – 8.8 (Alkaline).
• Water Hardness: 10–25 dGH (Hard water).

• Recommended Foods: High-quality protein-rich sinking pellets or flakes.
• Frozen/Live Foods: Mysis shrimp, chopped prawns, brineshrimp, and krill.
• Natural Enrichment: They will often actively hunt any small pest snails present in the aquarium.
• Dietary Note: Avoid feeding “generic” tropical flakes; they require a diet tailored for African Rift Lake carnivores.

• Temperament: Generally peaceful for a Malawi cichlid, though males become territorial during spawning.
• Social Structure: Best kept in a harem (one male to three or more females). This reduces the pressure on individual females during the male’s frequent courtship displays.
• Tank Mates: Best housed with other relatively peaceful Malawi Haps (e.g., Cyrtocara moorii or Protomelas) and larger Aulonocara (Peacocks). Avoid highly aggressive Mbuna, which may bully or outcompete them for food.

• Substrate:Sand is highly recommended. As a Mylochromis species, they naturally sift through the substrate looking for food.
• Decor: A mix of open swimming space and rockwork is ideal. Provide large rocks to create caves and visual barriers, but ensure the central and upper areas of the tank remain unobstructed.
• Filtration: Efficient biological and mechanical filtration is essential to manage the waste of these medium-to-large fish. Moderate water flow is preferred.

• Size: Males can grow to approximately 18–20 cm (7–8 inches); females are typically slightly smaller.
• Colouration: Males develop a beautiful golden-yellow to olive-green sheen with dark diagonal barred markings (a trait of the Mylochromis genus). Females and juveniles remain a cryptic silver or grey to blend into the sandy environment.
• Breeding: They are maternal mouthbrooders. The female will carry the eggs and fry in her buccal cavity for approximately 3 to 4 weeks.
