Description
Platinum Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)
Species Profile:
The Platinum Angelfish is the “high-fashion” variant of the freshwater aquarium world. While it belongs to the same species as the classic Silver Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), the Platinum morph is a result of selective breeding for a specific genetic trait that strips away the traditional black bars and replaces them with a brilliant, pearlescent white sheen.
In the right lighting, these fish don’t just look white; they look almost holographic, reflecting blues and greens across their scales.

Physical Description
Unlike the Silver Angelfish, which uses vertical bars for camouflage, the Platinum Angelfish is designed to stand out.
-
Colouration: A solid, brilliant white or “creamy” silver body. High-quality specimens should have no visible black spots or bars.
-
Iridescence: They possess a high degree of “guanine,” the crystalline material in fish scales that reflects light, giving them a metallic or “platinum” finish.
-
Finnage: They maintain the classic “arrowhead” shape. In some strains, you may find “Veil” Platinum varieties, which feature even longer, more flowing fins.
Aquarium Requirements
The “Tall Tank” Rule
Because Angelfish are laterally compressed (thin when viewed from the front) and vertically gifted, the depth of the aquarium is more important than the length.
-
Height: A minimum tank height of 45–50 cm is essential to prevent their trailing pelvic fins from dragging on the substrate.
-
Flow: They are not strong swimmers in heavy currents. Use a spray bar or a pre-filter sponge to keep the water movement gentle.
Water Parameters
Platinum morphs can be slightly more sensitive to poor water quality than their wild-type cousins due to the selective breeding process.
-
Temperature: 24°C – 29°C (75°F – 84°F).
-
pH: 6.0 – 7.4 (They prefer slightly acidic water).
-
Hardness: 3 – 10 dGH.
Diet and Nutrition
Platinum Angelfish are enthusiastic eaters. To maintain that high-gloss white colour, a varied diet is vital:
-
Primary: A high-quality flake or slow-sinking cichlid pellet.
-
Treats: Frozen Artemia (Brine Shrimp) and Mysis shrimp are excellent for protein.
-
Note on Colour Enhancers: Be cautious with “colour-enhancing” foods designed for red fish (containing high astaxanthin/canthaxanthin), as these can sometimes give your pure white Platinum fish an unwanted yellowish or pinkish hue.
Behaviour and Tank Mates
Don’t let the ethereal beauty fool you; at the end of the day, this is still a Cichlid.
-
The Hierarchy: When young, they are peaceful. As they reach sexual maturity, they will form a “pecking order.” If a pair forms, they will claim a third of the tank as their own and chase away anyone who enters.
-
Compatibility: * Good: Larger Tetras (Bleeding Heart, Congo), Corydoras, Bristlenose Plecos, and peaceful Gouramis.
-
Bad: Tiger Barbs (notorious fin-nippers) and very small shrimp or fish (like Neon Tetras), which the Angelfish may eventually view as an expensive snack.
-
Genetic Note
The Platinum trait is usually recessive. In genetic shorthand, it is often associated with the “Gold” gene ($g/g$). To produce a “Platinum” look, the fish must inherit the trait from both parents, making them a prized find for many hobbyists.
