Red Neon Blue-eye is an exquisite, highly active nano fish native to the swamps and slow-moving streams of West Papua. Celebrated for its striking neon red-orange body stripe and vivid blue eyes, this peaceful schooling species is a magnificent addition to planted community and nano aquaria.

Tank Setup and Parameters
This species thrives in mature, biologically stable aquaria with plenty of vegetation. While they are resilient, maintaining clean, well-filtered water is essential to prevent disease and support their active lifestyle.

Aquarium Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 40 litres (approximately 11 gallons) for a small group.
- Filter Flow: Moderate water movement is ideal, but avoid overly turbulent currents that might exhaust these small fish.
- Substrate: Dark gravel or sand to make their neon orange coloration stand out vividly.
- Aquascaping: Heavily planted sections using species like Vallisneria, Hygrophila, and floating plants to diffuse harsh light, alongside an open central area for swimming and display behaviour.
- Cover: A tight-fitting lid is highly recommended, as they can occasionally leap from the water when competing or startled.
Diet and Feeding
Pseudomugil luminatus is a micro-predator with a relatively small, upward-pointing mouth, meaning they naturally feed from the upper water column and surface.
- Base Diet: High-quality crushed flakes, micro-granules, or specialized nano-fish pellets.
- Live and Frozen Foods: Daily or frequent treats of baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), daphnia, cyclops, and micro-worms.
- Feeding Tip: Feed small amounts twice daily. They rarely pick food up from the substrate, so ensure items sink slowly.
Behaviour and Compatibility
These are peaceful, highly social fish that must be kept in groups. When kept in sufficient numbers, males will display fascinating, non-aggressive sparring rituals, flaring their large fins to impress females.
- Schooling Numbers: A minimum group of 6 to 8 individuals is essential, though a larger group of 10 or more will significantly reduce shyness and promote better coloration. Keep a ratio of several females to each male to distribute male attention.
- Ideal Tankmates: Similarly sized, peaceful nano species such as Chilli Rasboras, Microdevario kubotai, Neon Tetras, small Corydoras, and adult dwarf shrimp (such as Cherry Shrimp).
- Incompatible Tankmates: Any large, aggressive, or boisterous fish (such as large Cichlids or Angels) that could easily swallow them or compete too aggressively for food.
Sexual Dimorphism and Breeding
- Males: Exceptionally colourful with vibrant red-orange bodies, elongated dorsal and pelvic fins adorned with dark spots, and striking blue eyes.
- Females: Much more understated, displaying shorter, clear fins and a more subdued body coloration.
Breeding Summary
Breeding this species is highly achievable in a home aquarium and can happen continuously under ideal conditions.
- Setup: Provide a separate breeding tank filled with fine-leaved plants (like Java Moss) or commercial spawning mops.
- Method: They are continuous egg-scatterers, depositing a few adhesive eggs daily rather than spawning all at once.
- Rearing: Parents do not tend to the brood and may eat the eggs. It is best to move the spawning mops to a separate hatching tank every few days. The fry hatch in roughly 10 to 14 days and require infusoria or liquid fry food before progressing to baby brine shrimp.
