The Red Empress (Protomelas taeniolatus) is a brilliantly coloured, open-water cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. Belonging to the group known colloquially as “Haps” (short for Haplochromis), this species is highly prized in the aquarium hobby. Unlike many of their rock-dwelling neighbours (Mbuna), Red Empresses are relatively peaceful open-water dwellers that bring spectacular, vibrant colouration to large African cichlid displays.

Species Overview

Appearance and Dimorphism

The Red Empress exhibits extreme sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females look entirely different. It can take up to 9 to 12 months for juvenile fish to mature and reveal their true colours.

Adult Males

Fully mature males are a breathtaking sight. They develop a brilliant, fiery orange-to-red body contrasted by an intense metallic blue or turquoise head and dorsal fin. The anal fin is often trimmed with deep red and orange margins, and white highlights typically edge the dorsal fin.

Adult Females and Juveniles

Females and sub-adults remain a silvery-grey colour with a pattern of two dark horizontal stripes and several faint vertical bars running along their flanks. While less colourful, their muted tones are essential in the wild for camouflage against predators.

Aquarium Setup and Habitat

Because Protomelas taeniolatus is an active, fast-swimming fish that inhabits the sediment-free, rocky zones of Lake Malawi, their aquarium setup requires a balance of open swimming space and structural territory.

Layout and Décor

• Swimming Space: Open water is crucial. Do not clutter the centre of the aquarium with rocks; leave ample room for the males to display and swim freely.

• Rockwork: Arrange large piles of smooth rocks (such as ocean rock, slate, or mini-landscape rock) along the back and sides of the tank. This creates natural boundary lines and provides secure caves for females or submissive males to retreat from the dominant male’s attention.

• Substrate: A soft coral sand or aragonite substrate is highly recommended. Red Empresses naturally sift through the substrate for food, and coral sand helps naturally buffer the water to the high pH levels they require.

Water Parameters

Lake Malawi is famous for its exceptionally clear, hard, and alkaline water. Replicating these chemistry parameters is paramount to the health and colour expression of the Red Empress.

• Temperature: 23°C to 28°C (73°F to 82°F)

• pH: 7.8 to 8.6

• Hardness: 10 to 25 dGH

• Filtration and Water Quality: These fish produce a high bioload and are sensitive to poor water quality. Robust external canister filtration is a necessity to provide high water turnover and excellent oxygenation. Regular weekly water changes of 40% to 50% are vital to keep nitrates strictly under control.

Diet and Feeding

In their natural habitat, Red Empresses are specialized herbivores (specifically Aufwuchs grazers), scraping algae, small invertebrates, and biofilm from the surfaces of rocks.

• Base Diet: High-quality, spirulina-based flakes, pellets, or cichlid wafers should form the core of their diet.

• Protein Sources: Supplement with frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and daphnia.

• Dietary Warning: Avoid feeding mammalian proteins (like beef heart) or heavy amounts of bloodworms. High-protein, low-fibre diets can disrupt their digestive tracts and cause a fatal condition known as “Malawi Bloat.”

Temperament and Compatibility

Compared to the highly aggressive Mbuna cichlids, the Red Empress is considered a mildly aggressive and generally peaceful “Hap.” However, males will become highly territorial and assertive during spawning periods.

Stocking Strategy

• Harem Setup: It is best to keep them in a harem structure consisting of one male to three or more females. This distributes the male’s relentless breeding attention across several individuals, preventing any single female from becoming exhausted or injured. Avoid keeping multiple adult males together unless the aquarium is exceptionally large (over 600 litres).

• Compatible Tank Mates: They coexist excellently with other medium-sized Lake Malawi Haps (such as the Blue Orchid or Malawi Eyebiter) and Peacock Cichlids (Aulonocara species).

• Avoid: Highly aggressive, rock-dwelling Mbuna (like Demasoni or Kenyi cichlids), as their hyper-aggressive nature can stress the more placid Red Empress.

Breeding

The Red Empress is a maternal mouthbrooder, and breeding them in a well-maintained aquarium is relatively common.

1. Courtship: The dominant male will shimmy, shake, and display his intense colours to entice a female to his chosen spawning site—usually a flat, cleaned rock or a shallow depression dug into the sand.

2. The Spawn: The female will lay a small batch of eggs, turn around, and immediately pick them up in her mouth. She will then nudge the male’s anal fin (which often features “egg spots”), prompting him to release milt, which fertilises the eggs safely inside her mouth.

3. The Incubation: The female will hold the fertilised eggs in her buccal cavity (mouth) for approximately 21 to 28 days. During this “holding” period, she will not eat and her throat will noticeably swell.

4. The Fry: Once fully developed, the female will release up to 40 to 50 free-swimming fry into a safe crevice. The fry can be fed finely crushed spirulina flakes or freshly hatched baby brine shrimp. For maximum survival rates, the holding female can be gently moved to a dedicated rearing tank prior to releasing her young.
