Specialised Buffer System for African Rift Lake Cichlids

Seachem Malawi Buffer is a scientifically formulated blend of carbonate salts designed to replicate the natural chemical environment of Lake Malawi, Africa. The minerals in this buffer help to permanently raise and stabilise the pH of aquarium water in the ideal range of 7.8 – 8.6 while simultaneously increasing the carbonate hardness (Alkalinity/kH). This stability is absolutely critical for the long-term health, breeding success, and vibrant colouration of Peacock Cichlids (Aulonocara), Mbuna (Maylandia), and other endemic species from the lake.

• pH Stabilisation: It reliably buffers the water, preventing dangerous pH crashes and swings which are highly stressful to cichlids. It targets the naturally alkaline pH of Lake Malawi.
• Alkalinity (kH) Boost: Increases the kH (carbonate hardness), which acts as the pH ‘safety net’, ensuring the water can resist changes from biological waste acids.
• Mineral Replacement: Replaces the essential mineral salts (e.g., magnesium and calcium) consumed by fish and removed during filtration, promoting osmoregulation and overall vitality.
• Compatibility: Designed for use with tap water, reverse osmosis (RO) water, or deionised (DI) water.

2. Directions for Use (Dosing Guide)

The required dosage will depend on your current water parameters. Always test your source water’s pH and kH before use.

A. Initial Setup / Major Water Change

1. Preparation: Use 5 grams (approx. one level teaspoon) of Malawi Buffer for every 40 litres (8.8 Imperial Gallons) of aquarium water.
2. Dissolving: Pre-dissolve the buffer in a container of freshwater before adding it to the aquarium. Do not add the powder directly to the tank, as this may harm the fish.
3. Application: Add the pre-dissolved solution to the tank slowly, preferably into an area of high water flow (e.g., near the filter outlet).
4. Monitoring: Wait 24 hours, then test the pH. If the target pH of 7.8–8.6 has not been reached, repeat the dose until the desired stability is achieved.

B. Maintenance Dose

• When performing your weekly 30–40% water change, use the initial dosage amount for only the volume of new replacement water. For example, if changing 40 litres, use 5 grams.

3. Important Maintenance Tips

• Avoid Overdosing: Excessive use can dramatically raise the pH too quickly, which is highly dangerous. Always measure the powder accurately and add it gradually.
• Mixing with Other Buffers: This product is specific to Lake Malawi chemistry. If you are keeping species from Lake Tanganyika or Lake Victoria, use the appropriate Seachem Tanganyika Buffer or Victoria Buffer instead. Do not mix them unless following a precise hybrid formula.
• Filtration Media: Using a substrate like Aragonite sand or crushed coral alongside the buffer will help to maintain the high pH and kH levels naturally between dosing.
