The Red Mask Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma macmasteri “Red”):

Species Profile:

• Scientific Name: Apistogramma macmasteri (Var. “Red” or “Red Mask”)
• Origin: South America, specifically the Meta River basin in Colombia (Orinoco drainage).
• Environment: They inhabit slow-moving streams and shallow waters with sandy riverbeds. Their natural waters are typically stained with tannins from decaying leaf litter, creating “blackwater” conditions that are soft and acidic.

• Males: Larger (up to 7–8 cm) and more colourful. They develop extended fin rays (filaments) on the dorsal and anal fins and exhibit the signature red mask and tail patterns.
• Females: Smaller (approx. 5 cm) and less colourful, typically displaying a drab grey-brown hue. However, during breeding, they transform into a vibrant bright yellow with distinct black markings to signal readiness.

• Minimum Size: 80 litres (20 gallons) is the minimum for a single pair or trio.
• Ideal Shape: A “long” tank (e.g. 80–90 cm width) is preferable to a tall one, as Apistogramma are bottom-dwellers that require territory space.

• Substrate: Fine sand is essential. These cichlids are geophagus (earth-eaters) by nature and will constantly sift through the substrate for food. Gravel can damage their delicate gills.
• Hiding Spots: Provide abundant caves using coconut halves, terracotta pots, or dense driftwood. Break up lines of sight to reduce aggression.
• Plants & Leaf Litter: Dense planting (e.g., Java Fern, Amazon Swords) helps them feel secure. Adding dried Catappa (Indian Almond) leaves releases beneficial tannins and creates a natural leaf litter bed.

• Live/Frozen Food: This should form the bulk of their diet. Offer bloodworms, brine shrimp (Artemia), daphnia, and white mosquito larvae.
• Dry Food: High-quality sinking pellets or granules are accepted. Ensure they are small enough for their mouths.
• Frequency: Feed small amounts 2 times daily.

• Temperament: Generally peaceful but territorial. Males can be aggressive towards one another; it is best to keep only one male per tank unless the aquarium is very large (120cm+).
• Social Structure: They are often polygamous (harem breeders). A ratio of 1 male to 2–3 females is ideal, provided there are enough caves for each female to establish her own territory.
• Suitable Tank Mates:
  • Dither Fish: Small, schooling fish like Neon Tetras, Pencilfish, or Rasboras encourage the cichlids to come out of hiding.
  • Avoid: Large, aggressive cichlids or very active bottom dwellers (like large Corydoras) that might disturb their territories, especially during breeding.

1. Conditioning: Feed the pair heavily with live foods (like live blackworms) for 1–2 weeks.
2. Water Trigger: Lower the pH (towards 6.0) and water hardness. Performing a water change with slightly cooler, soft water (RO water) can simulate the rainy season and trigger spawning.
3. Spawning: The female lays eggs on the ceiling of a cave. She will then turn vibrant yellow and aggressively guard the cave, while the male defends the outer perimeter.
4. Fry Care: Eggs hatch in 3–4 days. Once free-swimming (after another 5–7 days), feed the fry baby brine shrimp or microworms. The female will often parade the fry around the tank.
