The Apistogramma sp. D37 is a relatively new and beautiful collection point variant of dwarf cichlid, highly prized by aquarists for its vibrant colouration and engaging parental behaviour. As with all Apistogramma, it originates from the slow-moving, leaf-littered blackwater habitats of South America, meaning water quality and environment are crucial for its health.

Key Characteristics and Temperament

• Size: Males typically reach $6\text{ cm}$ ($\approx 2.4\text{ inches}$); females are smaller, usually around $4\text{ cm}$.
• Appearance: Males display bright finnage (often yellow or blue) with bold stripes and intricate patterns, especially when courting or defending territory. Females are more subdued yellow, darkening significantly when breeding.
• Temperament: Generally peaceful towards fish that occupy the middle and top water columns. However, they are intensely territorial towards conspecifics (other D37s or other Apistogramma) and bottom-dwellers, especially when preparing to spawn or raising fry.
• Recommended Grouping: Best kept as a single, bonded pair, or a single male with a harem of two or three females (a trio). Avoid keeping two or more males together unless in a very large, heavily decorated tank.

• Essential Supplements: Live or frozen foods should be fed daily to maintain colouration and encourage breeding. This includes tubifex, blackworm, brine shrimp (artemia), daphnia, and mysis shrimp.

Compatibility

• Suitable Tank Mates: Peaceful, mid-to-top dwelling species such as Hatchetfish, Pencilfish, and small, peaceful Tetras (e.g., Ember Tetras, Neon Tetras). These fish will not interfere with the Apistogramma territories.
