Assassin Snail (Anentome helena)

A Complete Guide

Assassin Snail, scientifically known as Anentome helena, is a unique and beneficial freshwater snail. Native to Southeast Asia, it is highly valued by aquarists for its ability to control populations of unwanted snails, such as Malaysian Trumpet Snails, Bladder Snails, and Ramshorn Snails. Its beautiful, conically shaped shell, adorned with a distinctive yellow and dark brown spiral pattern, also makes it an attractive inhabitant for a community aquarium.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: The Assassin Snail has a striking appearance. Its shell is a spiral cone with alternating bands of yellow and dark brown or black. The snail itself is greyish-white and moves along the substrate with a muscular foot. It has a long siphon that it uses to smell food and breathe.
  • Size: This is a relatively small snail, typically reaching a size of around 2-3 cm (just over an inch).
  • Lifespan: With good care, an Assassin Snail can live for 2 to 3 years.

Care and Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: A small group of Assassin Snails can be kept in a nano tank, with a minimum size of 20 litres (5 gallons) being suitable. For a larger community aquarium, a group of 5 or more is recommended to be effective at controlling pests.
  • Water Parameters: They are very adaptable and can thrive in a wide range of water conditions. The ideal temperature range is to ( to ). A neutral to slightly alkaline pH of 7.0 to 8.0 is preferred. Good water quality is important, so regular water changes are a must.
  • Tank Setup: A fine sand substrate is ideal, as they love to burrow into it to rest or to ambush unsuspecting prey. They are not known to eat healthy live plants, so they are safe to keep in a planted aquarium.

Diet

The primary diet of the Assassin Snail is, as the name suggests, other snails. They will actively hunt and consume any snails small enough for them to overpower.

  • Pest Snail Control: If you have a problem with nuisance snails, the Assassin Snail is an effective solution. It will naturally keep their population in check.
  • Supplementary Feeding: Once the pest snail population is under control, you’ll need to provide them with food. They will accept a variety of protein-rich foods, such as:
    • Sinking pellets or wafers.
    • Frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
    • Small pieces of fish or prawn.

Behaviour and Compatibility

  • Temperament: The Assassin Snail is a peaceful and non-aggressive species. It will not bother fish, shrimp, or other invertebrates that are too large to be considered prey. They are slow-moving and spend most of their time either buried in the substrate or crawling along it.
  • Tank Mates: They are excellent in a community tank with peaceful fish. Avoid housing them with very large, aggressive fish that might mistake them for a snack. They are generally safe with most shrimp, though a very small baby shrimp might be at risk if the snail is particularly hungry.
