The Balloon Molly (Poecilia sphenops) is a selectively bred variation of the standard Molly fish. It is instantly recognisable by its distinctively rounded, short body, which gives it its name. This gentle and active fish is a livebearer, meaning it gives birth to live young, and is a fantastic addition to a freshwater community aquarium.

Key Characteristics

• Appearance: Unlike a standard Molly, the Balloon Molly has a short, rounded body and a slightly bent spine. It comes in a wide variety of colours, including black, silver, gold, and vibrant orange, with many variations and patterns.
• Size: An adult Balloon Molly typically reaches a length of around 7.5 cm (3 inches), with the females often being slightly larger than the males.
• Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 3 to 5 years.

Care and Tank Requirements

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Balloon Mollies. They are active swimmers and will appreciate the extra space.
• Water Parameters: Balloon Mollies are quite adaptable. While they can tolerate a wide range of water conditions, they prefer a temperature of 22∘C to 28∘C (72∘F to 82∘F) and a slightly alkaline pH of 7.0 to 8.0. They also do well with a small amount of aquarium salt, which can help prevent disease.
• Tank Setup: A well-filtered tank with plenty of plants and hiding spots is ideal. They enjoy both open swimming areas and sheltered zones where they can feel secure. A darker substrate can help to highlight their vibrant colours.

Diet

Balloon Mollies are omnivores. Their diet should consist of a mix of high-quality flake food, along with plenty of vegetable matter. They enjoy blanched vegetables like courgette and shelled peas, as well as specialised algae wafers. Supplementing their diet with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms will also keep them healthy and happy.

Behaviour and Compatibility

• Temperament: These are generally peaceful and inquisitive fish. It’s best to keep them in groups with a ratio of one male to two or three females to prevent the males from harassing any single female. Their docile nature makes them a perfect fit for a community tank.
• Tank Mates: Due to their peaceful nature and preference for slightly harder, more alkaline water, they are compatible with other fish that share these needs. Excellent tank mates include other mollies, Guppies, Platies, Swordtails, peaceful tetras, Corydoras, and Bristlenose Plecos. Avoid aggressive fish that may nip at their fins or outcompete them for food.
