Description
Aulonocara stuartgranti “Usisya”
(Aulonocara stuartgranti “Usisya”), also known as the Neon Blue Usisya, is a stunning variant of the Flavescent Peacock endemic to the Usisya region of Lake Malawi. It is highly sought after by aquarists for its intense electric blue hues and active, curious nature.
- Scientific Name: Aulonocara stuartgranti “Usisya”.
- Common Names: Usisya Peacock, Neon Blue Usisya, Flavescent Peacock.
- Adult Size: Typically grows to 10–13 cm (approx. 4–5 inches).
- Lifespan: Roughly 8–10 years in a well-maintained aquarium.
- Temperament: Generally peaceful for a Malawi cichlid, though males can be territorial, especially when breeding.
- Tank Size: A minimum of 200–300 litres (approx. 4–5 feet in length) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F).
- pH Level: Hard, alkaline water is essential, ideally between 7.5 and 8.5.
- Hardness: 10–20 dGH.
- Substrate & Decor: Use a sandy substrate to support their natural “sand-sifting” feeding behaviour. Provide rocky caves and crevices for hiding, but ensure the centre remains open for swimming.
- Staple Diet: High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes.
- Treats: Supplement with frozen or live foods such as Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp.
- Note: Avoid overfeeding and ensure some vegetable matter (like Spirulina) is included to prevent digestive issues.
- Social Group: For the best results, keep them in a “harem” of one male to three or more females to reduce aggression towards individual females.
- Tank Mates: They pair well with other peaceful Lake Malawi “Haps” (e.g., Copadichromis, Placidochromis) and easygoing Mbuna like Yellow Labs (Labidochromis caeruleus).
- Avoid: Do not house them with overly aggressive Mbuna or other Aulonocara species to prevent territorial fighting and hybridisation.
