Betta Antuta Full Mask is a unique and sought-after variant of the wild Betta antuta. Unlike the more common domesticated Bettas, this fish is known for its stunning full-faced colouration and more reserved personality. It is a fantastic choice for experienced aquarists looking for a truly special and elegant addition to their tank.

Appearance & Origin

The “Full Mask” variant is named for the distinctive solid colouration on its head and face, which is a departure from the typical wild Betta pattern. Native to the calm, blackwater streams of Borneo, this species has evolved to thrive in environments with soft, acidic water. Their bodies are generally a deep, iridescent blue or green, often with subtle red or orange highlights on their fins.

Tank Requirements

• Tank Size: While smaller than many community fish, a single Betta Antuta Full Mask should be kept in a tank no smaller than 20 litres (about 5 US gallons). A larger tank is always better, as it provides more stable water conditions.
• Water Conditions:
  • Temperature: 24−28∘C (75−82∘F)
  • pH: $5.0-6.5$ (Acidic)
  • Hardness: Very soft water
• Filtration: Use a low-flow sponge filter or a small internal filter with a baffle to reduce the current. Betta fish are not strong swimmers and prefer still water.
• Substrate & Décor: A dark substrate, such as fine sand or black gravel, will help showcase the fish’s colours. The tank should be heavily planted with live plants like Java Fern, Anubias, and Cryptocoryne to provide ample hiding spots and to help maintain water quality. The addition of Indian Almond leaves or driftwood is highly recommended, as they release tannins that create a natural blackwater environment, which is crucial for this species.

Diet & Feeding

The Betta Antuta is a micropredator in its natural habitat, so its diet should be rich in protein.

• Primary Diet: A high-quality pellet or flake food specifically formulated for Bettas.
• Supplements: Offer a variety of frozen or live foods to ensure a balanced diet. This can include:
  • Bloodworms and brine shrimp (frozen or live).
  • Daphnia.
  • Small crickets (if the fish is large enough).
• Feeding Habits: Feed a small amount once or twice a day. Overfeeding can lead to health problems and poor water quality.

Tank Mates & Compatibility

Unlike the aggressive domesticated Betta splendens, the Betta Antuta is generally peaceful and can be kept in a community tank with caution.

• Suitable Tank Mates:
  • Small, peaceful tetras (e.g., Ember Tetras, Neon Tetras).
  • Dwarf Rasboras.
  • Corydoras catfish.
• Incompatible Tank Mates: Avoid keeping them with other male Bettas, any fin-nipping fish, or large, aggressive species. Do not keep them with brightly coloured fish that might be mistaken for another male Betta.

Breeding

Breeding the Betta Antuta is a rewarding but challenging process. They are mouthbrooders, which is different from the bubble-nesting behaviour of many other Bettas.

• Breeding Triggers: Create a dedicated breeding tank with soft, acidic water and plenty of hiding spots. A slightly higher temperature (28∘C or 82∘F) can encourage spawning.
• Parental Care: The male will take the eggs into his mouth and hold them for up to two weeks until they hatch. He will not eat during this time, so it’s important to keep him separate from other fish to prevent stress.
