Neolamprologus brevis, commonly known as the Brevis Shell Dweller, is a petite and captivating cichlid from the rocky, shell-littered shores of Lake Tanganyika in Africa. This species is unique among shell dwellers because a mated pair will form a lifelong bond and cohabitate in a single empty snail shell. Their small size and relatively peaceful nature make them a popular choice for aquarists interested in observing the complex social behaviours of cichlids.

Key Characteristics

• Appearance: The Brevis is a small, torpedo-shaped fish, typically growing to about 5 cm (2 inches). Its body is a subtle grey-brown, but it is covered in numerous rows of shimmering blue or white spots, which can become especially vibrant during courtship.
• Temperament: This is one of the more peaceful shell-dwelling cichlids. A mated pair is not aggressive towards other fish, though they will fiercely defend their shared shell from intruders. Their monogamous nature is a defining trait, as they form a strong pair bond and cohabitate in a single shell.
• Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 5 years or more.

Aquarium Requirements

A dedicated aquarium setup is essential to meet the unique needs of the Brevis.

• Tank Size: A tank of at least 40 litres (10 gallons) is sufficient for a single pair. However, a larger tank of 75 litres (20 gallons) or more is recommended if you wish to keep them in a community setting.
• Water Parameters: As they are from Lake Tanganyika, they require very specific and stable water conditions.
  • Temperature: 24∘C to 27∘C (75∘F to 81∘F)
  • pH: The water must be alkaline, with a pH of $7.8$ to $9.0$.
  • Hardness: They also need hard water, with a dH (degrees of hardness) of $10$ to $20$.
• Tank Setup: The most critical element is the substrate, which must be fine sand. This allows them to easily move shells and create their home. You must provide a few empty snail shells, such as escargot shells. Place one or two shells in the tank to start, and observe the fish to ensure they find a home they like. They prefer to create a ‘nest’ in the sand around their shell, and you’ll often see them moving grains of sand with their mouths.

Diet and Feeding

• Diet: N. brevis are carnivores, feeding on small crustaceans and invertebrates in their natural habitat. In the aquarium, their diet should consist of a high-quality cichlid pellet or flake food.
• Feeding: Supplement their staple diet with small frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia. This provides them with essential proteins and encourages healthy colouration.

Breeding and Compatibility

• Breeding: Breeding is one of the most rewarding aspects of keeping this species. Once a pair has formed, they will choose and share a single shell. The female lays her eggs inside, and both parents diligently guard the entrance. The fry will emerge from the shell when they are ready, and it is a fascinating process to watch a whole family unit using just one shell.
• Tank Mates: Due to their peaceful nature, they can be kept with other small Tanganyikan cichlids that do not compete for shells. Good tank mates include small rock-dwelling species like Julidochromis, Altolamprologus, and open-water species like Cyprichromis. Avoid keeping them with larger, aggressive species or other shell dwellers that will compete for territory.
