Bristol Shubunkin
A Complete Guide:
The Bristol Shubunkin is a distinctive and elegant variety of goldfish, named after its city of origin, Bristol, England. It is easily recognised by its single, well-developed tail fin which has a gracefully rounded or ‘heart’ shape, a key feature that sets it apart from other Shubunkin varieties. With its beautiful calico colouration—a mosaic of blue, orange, red, black, and white—it is a popular choice for both pond keepers and aquarium enthusiasts.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: The most defining characteristic is the single, smoothly rounded caudal (tail) fin, which is much more pronounced than on a common goldfish. The fish’s body is slender and streamlined.
- Colouration: They have a striking ‘calico’ pattern, which is a mix of metallic and matte scales in various colours. A good quality Bristol Shubunkin will have a high concentration of blue, often with speckles of black and flashes of orange.
- Size: These are a large variety of goldfish. In a pond, they can grow up to 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) or more. In an aquarium, they will remain smaller but still require a spacious environment.
- Lifespan: With appropriate care, they are a long-lived species and can live for 15-20 years.
Care and Habitat Requirements
- Ponds vs. Aquariums: Bristol Shubunkins are generally better suited to ponds due to their potential size and hardiness. They can be kept in large aquariums, but a minimum of 180 litres (around 40 gallons) is recommended for a single fish, with an additional 40 litres for each subsequent fish.
- Water Parameters: As coldwater fish, they do not require a heater. The ideal temperature range is to ( to ), though they can tolerate a wider range. A pH of 6.5 to 7.5 is suitable. Excellent filtration is essential to manage the waste these fish produce.
- Habitat Setup: For a pond, ensure it is at least 60 cm (2 feet) deep to prevent freezing in winter. For an aquarium, use a sandy or fine gravel substrate with plenty of plants and open swimming space.
Diet
Bristol Shubunkins are omnivores and will readily eat a variety of foods. A balanced diet is key to their health and colouration.
- Staple: A good quality flake or sinking pellet food specifically formulated for goldfish.
- Supplements: Offer fresh vegetables like blanched peas, lettuce, or spinach. They also enjoy live or frozen foods such as bloodworms and daphnia as an occasional treat.
Behaviour and Compatibility
- Temperament: They are a peaceful, active, and social species. They should be kept with other coldwater fish that have similar needs and are not aggressive.
- Tank Mates: Excellent companions include other goldfish varieties like Commons, Comets, and other Shubunkins. They can also be kept with other non-aggressive, coldwater fish that are large enough not to be bullied.
