Electric Blue Johani Cichlid

A Comprehensive Guide:

The Electric Blue Johani Cichlid (Melanochromis johanni) is an aggressive and territorial freshwater fish from Lake Malawi in Africa. They are part of a group of cichlids known as Mbuna, which translates to ‘rockfish’, a name that describes their natural habitat of rocky shorelines. The males are famous for their brilliant blue and black striped coloration, while the females and juveniles are a vibrant yellow or orange, which can sometimes lead to them being confused with the Melanochromis auratus.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: Adult males are a striking iridescent blue with several distinct black, horizontal stripes. Females and juveniles are a contrasting yellow or orange with black stripes. They can grow up to 10 cm (4 inches) in length.
  • Temperament: They are highly territorial and aggressive, particularly the males, who will fiercely defend their territory from other males and even females.
  • Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 6 to 10 years or even longer.

Aquarium Requirements

Due to their aggressive nature, a spacious and well-thought-out tank setup is essential for keeping Electric Blue Johani Cichlids.

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 210 litres (55 gallons) is recommended for a single male and several females. If you plan to keep a community of Mbuna, a larger tank of 300 litres (80 gallons) or more is highly advised to provide enough territory for each fish.
  • Water Parameters: As a Lake Malawi cichlid, they require hard, alkaline water with a high pH.
    • Temperature: to ( to )
    • pH: A range of to is crucial.
    • Hardness: They prefer hard water, with a dH of to .
  • Tank Setup: The tank should be decorated with a large amount of rockwork to create caves, crevices, and visual barriers. This will help to reduce aggression by providing numerous territories and hiding spots. Use a fine sand substrate and avoid live plants, as these fish are known to uproot them.

Diet and Feeding

In the wild, Mbuna are primarily herbivores that graze on algae and the tiny organisms that live within it. Their diet in the aquarium should reflect this.

  • Diet: Offer a diet rich in vegetable matter. High-quality spirulina flakes and pellets should form the basis of their diet.
  • Feeding: You can supplement their diet with blanched vegetables like spinach and zucchini. Avoid giving them a lot of protein-rich foods (like bloodworms or beef heart), as this can lead to Malawi Bloat, a potentially fatal disease.

Compatibility

Choosing the right tank mates is the most important factor in a successful Electric Blue Johani Cichlid tank.

  • Good Tank Mates: They should only be kept with other Mbuna cichlids of a similar temperament and size. A good strategy is to overstock the tank slightly to diffuse aggression and prevent any single fish from being singled out.
  • Fish to Avoid: Do not mix them with peaceful fish like tetras or guppies. Also, avoid keeping them with other cichlids that have similar colours or patterns (especially males) to prevent aggression and cross-breeding. Avoid keeping more than one male together in anything but a very large tank, and always keep a ratio of at least two to three females per male to spread out their aggression.
