 Ceylon Stone Sucker (Garra ceylonensis)

Species Profile:

The Ceylon Stone Sucker (Garra ceylonensis) is a specialised, rheophilic cyprinid endemic to the island of Sri Lanka. Renowned for its unique evolutionary adaptations to high-velocity water, it is a functional and fascinating addition to “river-manifold” or hillstream aquarium setups.
1. Natural Distribution and Conservation
  • Origin: Found exclusively in Sri Lanka, ranging from lowland rivers to the high-altitude streams of the Central Highlands.
  • Habitat: They inhabit clear, oxygen-rich running waters with rocky substrates.
  • Conservation Status: Currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss from deforestation and hydroelectric projects. It is essential to ensure specimens are sourced from ethical suppliers.
2. Physical Adaptations
  • Size: Adult specimens typically reach 12–15 cm in length.
  • Mouthpart Morphology: Features a specialized suctorial disc on the chin (the mental disc). This allows the fish to anchor itself to rocks in torrential currents while grazing on biofilm and periphyton.
  • Body Shape: Sub-cylindrical and streamlined, with flattened ventral surfaces to minimize drag.
  • Colouration: Generally a cryptic olive-brown to bronze, often displaying a faint lateral stripe and reddish tints in the fins when maintained in peak condition.
3. Aquarium Requirements
The Garra ceylonensis cannot be kept in standard “still water” community tanks; they require a hillstream setup.
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres with a long footprint (e.g., 90cm – 120cm) to allow for swimming space and oxygen exchange.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 20°C – 26°C (Requires a seasonal cooling period; avoid constant high tropical temperatures).
    • pH: 6.5 – 7.5.
    • Hardness: 5 – 15 dGH.
  • Water Quality: Exceptional oxygenation is mandatory. Use powerheads or a river manifold system to create a unidirectional flow. High nitrate levels are poorly tolerated.
  • Substrate: Use smooth river stones, cobbles, and varied grades of gravel. Avoid sharp sand which can irritate their ventral surface.
4. Diet and Feeding
While primarily an aufwuchs grazer (feeding on algae and the microorganisms within it), they are opportunistic omnivores in captivity.
  • Grazing: High-intensity lighting is recommended to encourage natural green algae growth on rocks.
  • Supplementary Feeding: Offer high-quality sinking wafers, spirulina tabs, and occasional live/frozen foods such as bloodworms or white mosquito larvae.
  • Note: They are highly active and require more frequent feeding than sedentary bottom-dwellers.
5. Behaviour and Compatibility
  • Social Structure: Semi-aggressive and highly territorial towards their own kind. In smaller tanks, it is best kept singly. In very large setups (150cm+), a group of 6 or more can be kept to disperse aggression.
  • Tankmates: Choose robust species that enjoy high flow, such as Devario malabaricus (Giant Danio), Schistura loaches, or other hillstream specialists.
  • Caution: They may annoy slower, flat-bodied tankmates (like Discus or Fancy Goldfish) by attempting to “rasp” at their mucus coats.
6. Maintenance and Safety
  • The “Jump” Factor: Like all Garra species, they are expert climbers. They can use their suctorial discs to scale glass and damp cables. A tight fitting lid with no gaps is essential.
  • Filtration: Oversized filtration is recommended to manage the high waste output associated with their high metabolism.
