Hoplisoma cf. melanistium

Species Profile:

Commonly referred to as the Guiana Cory or Spotted Cory, this delightful catfish has recently undergone a bit of a scientific “rebrand.” While most hobbyists still know them as Corydoras melanistium, recent taxonomic revisions have moved them into the genus Hoplisoma.

The “cf.” in their name stands for confer, suggesting that the fish in the trade are “compared to” or “similar to” the true melanistium, as there is still some healthy debate among ichthyologists regarding specific populations.

Physical Description

Hoplisoma cf. melanistium is a master of subtle beauty. They possess a pale, silvery-tan body peppered with numerous small black spots. Two distinct black markings define their look:

1. The Mask: A vertical black stripe running directly through the eye.

2. The Dorsal Blotch: A large, prominent black spot on the base of the dorsal fin that often extends slightly onto the body.

Unlike some of their cousins, their spots are generally smaller and more numerous, giving them a “fine-grain” appearance compared to the bolder patterns of H. punctatus.

Aquarium Requirements

The Environment

To keep these bottom-dwellers happy, you need to think about their sensitive barbels (the “whiskers” they use to find food).

• Substrate: Fine sand is non-negotiable. Sharp gravel can wear down their barbels, leading to infections and a very grumpy fish.

• Decor: Use bogwood, smooth stones, and plenty of live plants (like Anubias or Java Fern) to provide shaded resting spots. They appreciate a bit of “leaf litter” (dried Indian Almond leaves) to mimic their natural blackwater habitats.

• Tank Size: A minimum of 60 – 75 litres is recommended for a small shoal.

Water Parameters

While they are relatively hardy, they prefer stable, clean water with a bit of a flow.

• Temperature: 22°C – 26°C (72°F – 79°F).

• pH: 6.0 – 7.2.

• Hardness: Soft to medium (2 – 12 dGH).

Diet and Nutrition

These fish are the ultimate cleaning crew, but don’t expect them to live on “scraps” alone. They are omnivores and require a dedicated diet:

• Sinking Pellets: High-quality catfish wafers or tablets.

• Live/Frozen Foods: They will go absolutely wild for bloodworms, brine shrimp, and tubifex.

• Feeding Tip: Feed them just before the lights go out or ensure the faster mid-water fish don’t scoff everything before it hits the bottom.

Social Behaviour and Compatibility

If there is one rule for Hoplisoma, it is this: never keep them alone. They are intensely social and will become stressed and shy if kept in small numbers. Aim for a group of at least six, though ten or more will reward you with much more natural, playful behaviour.

Good Tank Mates include:

• Small Tetras (Neon, Rummy-nose, Ember).

• Rasboras and Dwarf Gouramis.

• Other peaceful bottom-dwellers like Otocinclus.

• Avoid large, aggressive, or territorial fish (like large Cichlids) that might view a small Cory as a snack.

A Note on the Name Change: > Don’t be surprised if your local fish shop still labels these as Corydoras. The shift to Hoplisoma is part of a massive 2024 study that split the original Corydoras genus into several new groups. It’s the same fish you love, just with a fresh entry in the taxonomic ledger!
