Hovering Zebra Loach (Yunnanilus cruciatus) is a small, social fish from the cool, well-oxygenated streams of Lake Dianchi and its tributaries in Yunnan Province, China. Their name perfectly describes their appearance and unique swimming style, as they “hover” in the water column instead of darting along the substrate like many other loach species. They are an excellent choice for a peaceful, planted nano aquarium.

Key Characteristics

• Appearance: This is a very small species, reaching a maximum size of around 3 cm (just over an inch) as adults. Their body is a pale cream or beige colour with distinctive, dark, vertical bands that resemble a zebra’s stripes.
• Temperament: They are exceptionally peaceful and are not known to be aggressive towards any other fish. They are a highly social, shoaling species and should always be kept in groups of at least six, but preferably ten or more, to help them feel secure and exhibit their natural behaviour.
• Lifespan: With a stable environment and good care, they can live for 3 to 5 years.

Aquarium Requirements

The small size of the Hovering Zebra Loach makes them suitable for smaller setups, but their need for stable water conditions and a social group means a larger tank is always beneficial.

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 30 litres (7 gallons) is recommended for a small group. A larger tank is better, as it allows for a more stable ecosystem and a larger shoal.
• Water Parameters: They are adaptable but prefer cool, clean, and well-oxygenated water with a gentle flow.
  • Temperature: 18∘C to 24∘C (64∘F to 75∘F)
  • pH: They thrive in a slightly acidic to neutral range of $6.0$ to $7.5$.
  • Hardness: They are comfortable in soft to moderately hard water, with a dH of $5$ to $15$.
• Tank Setup: The aquarium should have a soft, sandy substrate. Provide plenty of hiding spots and cover using smooth rocks, driftwood, and heavy planting. They appreciate a lot of leaf litter on the bottom, as it provides both shelter and an extra source of biofilm for them to graze on. Avoid bright lighting and strong water currents.

Diet and Feeding

In the wild, Hovering Zebra Loaches feed on a variety of small invertebrates and detritus. Their tiny size means their diet must be composed of very small food particles.

• Diet: Their diet should consist of high-quality sinking micro pellets, finely crushed flake food, and small live or frozen foods.
• Feeding: Offer them tiny foods like microworms, daphnia, or baby brine shrimp. Since they are a small and shy species, feed them in several small portions throughout the day to ensure they get enough to eat.

Compatibility

Due to their shy nature and small size, selecting tank mates is crucial.

• Good Tank Mates: Choose other very small, peaceful fish that will not outcompete them for food or stress them out. Good companions include Celestial Pearl Danios, Chili Rasboras, small species of Corydoras catfish, and peaceful dwarf shrimp like Cherry Shrimp.
• Fish to Avoid: Avoid any larger or more boisterous fish that could harass or outcompete them. They should not be kept with larger cichlids, barbs, or other aggressive species.
