A Comprehensive Overview:
Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher) is a colourful, dwarf cichlid native to West Africa. They are peaceful, hardy, and ideal for beginner fishkeepers.
Tank Requirements
Kribensis require specific water conditions and tank setups to thrive.
-
- Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres for a single breeding pair.
- Water Temperature: 24°C to 27°C.
- pH Range: 6.0 to 7.5 is ideal.
- Water Hardness: Soft to medium (5–12 dGH).
- Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel to prevent injury during digging.
Aquarium Setup and Decor
Creating the right environment reduces stress and encourages natural breeding behaviours.
-
- Cave Availability: Provide clay pots, coconut shells, or rock caves.
- Dense Planting: Use robust plants like Anubias, Java Fern, and Amazon Swords.
- Hiding Spots: Arrange driftwood and bogwood to break lines of sight.
- Filtration: Use efficient filtration with a gentle to moderate water flow.
Diet and Feeding
Kribensis are omnivorous and accept most high-quality aquarium foods.
-
- Base Diet: High-quality sinking pellets or flake food.
- Live Foods: Feed bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia regularly.
- Frozen Foods: Provide thawed frozen equivalents for variety and health.
- Vegetable Matter: Offer spirulina flakes or blanched courgette occasionally.
Compatibility and Tank Mates
While generally peaceful, Kribensis become highly territorial when breeding.
-
- Suitable Mates: Fast-moving shoaling fish like Tiger Barbs or Zebra Danios.
- Tetra Species: Rummy-nose and Cardinal Tetras make excellent tank mates.
- Bottom Dwellers: Avoid small catfish like Corydoras in smaller tanks.
- Conspecifics: Keep only one mated pair per aquarium to prevent fighting.
Breeding Behaviour
Kribensis are cave spawners and display exceptional parental care.
- Pair Bonding: Form strong monogamous bonds.
- Colour Changes: The female’s belly turns a vibrant purple-pink when ready.
- Egg Deposition: Eggs are laid on the roof of the chosen cave.
- Fry Care: Both parents guard the fry fiercely once they swim freely.
