Neon Red Rosy Barb (Pethia conchonius)

The Neon Red Rosy Barb is a vibrantly coloured, selectively bred variant of the common Rosy Barb (Pethia conchonius). Highly prized for its deep, almost neon red colouration, this fish is an active, hardy, and social species that makes an excellent, eye-catching addition to the freshwater community tank. Hailing from South Asia, they are known for their playful nature and robust health.

Key Characteristics

• Size: Adults typically reach between 10 to 14 centimetres (4 to 5.5 inches) in length, with females being slightly plumper.
• Lifespan: Can live for 5 to 8 years in a well-maintained, stable environment.
• Colouration: The male’s body, particularly when in spawning condition, displays an intense, deep crimson or ‘neon’ red, especially towards the front half of the body. Females retain a more subdued pinkish-gold colouration. Both sexes have a prominent black spot near the tail fin.
• Temperament: Generally peaceful, active, and curious. They are energetic swimmers and should always be kept in a group.
• Social Note: They are schooling fish. When kept in insufficient numbers, they can occasionally become mildly nippy towards slow-moving or long-finned tankmates.

Natural Habitat and Distribution

The wild form of the Rosy Barb is native to South Asia, primarily found across Northern India, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. They inhabit clear, flowing streams, rivers, and sometimes standing water, preferring areas with dense vegetation and gravel or sandy substrates. They are highly adaptable fish, tolerant of slightly cooler temperatures than many other tropical species.

Aquarium Requirements

Tank Size

Due to their active, schooling nature and moderate adult size, a good amount of space is required.

• Minimum Tank Size: A school of 6 to 8 fish requires a minimum of 100 litres (approximately 25 US gallons).

Water Parameters

Rosy Barbs are quite hardy but thrive best in cool, clean, and slightly acidic to neutral water.

Décor and Furnishings

The aquarium layout should provide open areas for their constant swimming activity, alongside secure hiding spots.

1. Planting: Use robust, anchored live plants (e.g., Cryptocoryne or Java Fern) along the edges of the tank to provide cover, but leave the centre open.
2. Substrate: Fine gravel or sand.
3. Filtration: A reliable filter providing good mechanical and biological filtration is necessary, as they are active and can produce a reasonable bioload. Ensure moderate water movement (flow).
4. Hiding Places: Use pieces of smooth driftwood or smooth river stones to offer refuge and break up lines of sight.

Diet and Feeding

The Neon Red Rosy Barb is an opportunistic omnivore and will readily accept a wide variety of foods. A balanced diet is essential for maintaining their vibrant red colouration.

• Staple Foods: High-quality flake or sinking micro-pellet food should form the bulk of the diet. Ensure the food contains colour-enhancing ingredients (like carotenoids).
• Protein (Treats): Offer live or frozen foods (e.g., bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia) several times a week.
• Vegetable Matter: They benefit from blanched vegetables, such as spinach or shelled peas, as well as spirulina flakes.

Feed small amounts two to three times per day, only what the fish can consume within a few minutes.

Social Behaviour and Compatibility

Pethia conchonius are dedicated schooling fish. Keeping them in large groups is the best way to ensure they display their brilliant colours and redirect any excess energy away from other tankmates.

• Grouping: Always maintain a school of at least six to eight individuals.
• Compatible Tankmates: They mix well with most peaceful, similarly-sized or slightly larger community fish:
  • Other active Barb species (e.g., Cherry Barbs, Golden Barbs).
  • Rainbowfish (e.g., Boesemani or Dwarf Rainbowfish).
  • Corydoras Catfish and Loaches.
  • Robust Tetras (e.g., Serpae or Congo Tetras).

Fish to Avoid: Avoid slow-moving, long-finned species (like some male Bettas or Angelfish) and extremely shy or tiny fish, which may be intimidated or nipped by the Barbs.
