The Paraguay Bristlenose Pleco is a popular, algae-eating catfish admired for its distinctive head bristles (or odontodes) and manageable size. Originating from the Rio Paraguay basin in South America, this is a hardy, peaceful, and highly beneficial addition to most community aquariums, renowned for its diligence in cleaning up tank surfaces and consuming soft algae.

Key Characteristics and Identification

• Maximum Size: Unlike many common plecos, Bristlenose varieties remain small, typically reaching $10-12\text{ cm}$ ($4-5$ inches) in length.
• Appearance: They generally display mottled grey, brown, or black colouration with lighter spots, providing excellent camouflage against natural wood.
• Sexing: This is straightforward in mature fish (over one year old).
  • Male: Develop large, prominent, branched bristles (odontodes) that extend from the snout over the head.
  • Female: Have few or no bristles, usually only a small ring around the mouth.
• Temperament: They are highly peaceful and generally ignore all other fish. Males can occasionally be territorial towards other bottom-dwelling males, especially over a prized cave.

Aquarium Environment and Setup

The environment should replicate a slow-moving river bottom, rich in natural cover and essential wood fibre.

Tank Size and Filtration

• Minimum Tank Size: A single adult requires a tank of at least $75\text{ litres}$ ($16$ UK gallons).
• Filtration: Standard internal or external canister filters are suitable, focusing on mechanical and biological capacity. They are quite hardy, but consistent water quality is important.
• Water Movement: They appreciate moderate water flow and excellent aeration, which mimics their natural riverine environment.
• Maintenance: Perform weekly water changes of $25\%$ to keep the water parameters stable and clean.

Water Parameters

This species is adaptable but thrives in soft, slightly acidic conditions, reflecting the dark, tannin-stained waters of many South American rivers.

Substrate and Decor

• Substrate: Fine sand or smooth, rounded gravel is preferred. Sharp edges must be avoided as they can damage the fish’s soft belly.
• Driftwood (Bogwood/Mopani): This is absolutely mandatory. Bristlenose Plecos must rasp on real wood (lignin) to aid their digestion and provide essential fibre. The tank should contain at least one substantial piece of driftwood.
• Hiding Spots: Provide several smooth ceramic, slate, or PVC caves. Plecos are nocturnal and need sheltered spots to rest during the day. If breeding, the male will select one cave to guard his eggs.

Diet and Feeding

While often bought as algae eaters, their diet must be supplemented with a variety of foods, or they will not thrive.

• Primary Diet (Daily):
  • Blanched Vegetables: This should form the main component of their diet. Offer slices of blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, or green beans. Secure the food with a vegetable clip or weight it down with a lead-free sinker.
  • Algae Wafers: High-quality sinking wafers formulated for bottom-feeding herbivores.
• Essential Fibre: Access to driftwood at all times.
• Protein Supplement (1-2 times per week): Offer small quantities of frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, or brine shrimp to round out their nutrition.

Note: If a Bristlenose does not have enough fibre, its digestive tract can become blocked, leading to health issues.

Compatibility

The Paraguay Bristlenose is a model community fish.

• Tank Mates: They mix well with almost all peaceful community species, including small tetras, rasboras, barbs, mollies, and larger, peaceful gourami. They also do well with other non-aggressive bottom dwellers like Corydoras and Kuhli Loaches.
• Incompatibilities: Avoid keeping them with large, aggressive cichlids (like Oscars or Flowerhorns) that might view them as food or harass them, or very aggressive fin-nippers.
• Multiple Plecos: You can keep multiple Bristlenose plecos together, provided the tank is large enough and you offer enough hiding spots and wood to delineate territories.
