The Rainbow Shiner (Notropis chrosomus)

The Rainbow Shiner is a small, vibrant freshwater fish native to the southeastern United States. While not a conventional tropical fish, it has become increasingly popular in the aquarium hobby due to its peaceful temperament, hardiness, and the absolutely spectacular iridescent colouration displayed by males during the spawning season. This species is best suited for an unheated or temperate aquarium setup.

Key Characteristics

• Size: Adults typically reach 6 to 8 centimetres (about 2.5 to 3 inches) in length.
• Lifespan: Can live for 3 to 5 years in optimal conditions.
• Colouration: Outside of the spawning season, the fish are silvery-white with a noticeable lateral stripe. During spawning, males undergo a dramatic colour change, developing bright blue, purple, pink, and red flashes across their body, head, and fins, truly earning their name.
• Temperament: Extremely peaceful, active, and a dedicated schooling fish. They are very rarely aggressive and mix well with other similarly-sized temperate species.
• Social Note: They are highly social and thrive when kept in groups of at least eight to ten individuals.

Natural Habitat and Distribution

The Rainbow Shiner is found in the southeastern United States, primarily in the Gulf Coast drainages, ranging from Alabama to Georgia. They inhabit clear, flowing headwaters, creeks, and small rivers with gravel bottoms, preferring cooler, highly oxygenated water. Their habitat often includes areas with plenty of submerged structure and slight current.

Aquarium Requirements

Tank Size

Given their active nature and schooling requirement, they need ample horizontal swimming space.

• Minimum Tank Size: A small school requires a minimum of $120$ litres (approximately $30$ US gallons).

Water Parameters

The most crucial factor is temperature. They are a temperate fish and should not be kept in high tropical heat, as this can shorten their lifespan.

Décor and Furnishings

The setup should replicate a stream environment with plenty of flow and structure.

1. Substrate: Fine river gravel or sand, ideally mixed with some smooth river stones or pebbles.
2. Planting: Use robust, temperate-tolerant plants like Anubias, Java Fern, or Vallisneria. They should be placed around the edges, leaving open space for swimming.
3. Filtration: Excellent filtration that provides both clean water and good flow is essential.
4. Structure: Add large pieces of driftwood or rounded stones to provide visual breaks and resting spots.

Diet and Feeding

Rainbow Shiners are generalist omnivores, feeding on small insects, invertebrates, and plant matter in the wild.

• Staple Foods: High-quality flake or micro-pellet food should form the bulk of the diet.
• Protein (Essential): Regular feedings of small live or frozen foods (e.g., brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, or finely chopped bloodworms) are crucial for conditioning and bringing out their best colours.
• Vegetable Matter: They will graze on algae and accept spirulina-based foods.

Feed small amounts two to three times per day.

Social Behaviour and Compatibility

The Rainbow Shiner’s peaceful nature makes it an excellent candidate for a temperate community tank.

• Grouping: A large school of 10 or more fish is recommended to minimise stress and encourage the males to display their full breeding colours.
• Compatible Tankmates: They mix well with other peaceful temperate species that enjoy similar cool, high-oxygen water conditions:
  • White Cloud Mountain Minnows.
  • Temperate Corydoras species.
  • Danionins (e.g., Zebra Danios).
  • Smaller, peaceful loaches (e.g., Kuhli Loaches).

Fish to Avoid: Tropical fish that require temperatures above 26°C (79°F) should be avoided, as this is too warm for the shiners. Also, avoid any large or aggressive fish that could view the Shiners as food.
