Seachem Purigen

Product Overview:

Seachem Purigen is a high-performance synthetic adsorbent designed for sophisticated aquatic waste management. Unlike traditional ion-exchange resins or activated carbon, Purigen utilises a unique macro-porous polymer to target nitrogenous organic waste. This document outlines its chemical properties, functional advantages, and maintenance protocols for the British aquarist.

Product Composition and Functional Mechanism
Purigen is not a mixture of adsorbents but a dedicated synthetic polymer. Its primary function is the removal of soluble and insoluble impurities from water.
    • Scavenging Properties: It possesses an extreme affinity for nitrogenous organic compounds.
    • Targeted Removal: It captures waste before it can be converted by bacteria into ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate.
    • Water Polishing: It removes tannins and dyes, resulting in water of unparalleled clarity.
    • Redox Enhancement: By reducing the organic load, it significantly raises the Redox (ORP) potential of the aquarium.

Key Technical Advantages
1. Macro-Reticular Architecture
Most resins are spherical beads that appear smooth even under magnification. Purigen is macro-reticular, containing microscopic pores that vastly increase its functional surface area. This physical structure allows for a capacity over 500% greater than competing organic filtration media.
2. Selective Adsorption
Purigen is highly selective. It ignores simple elemental compounds and focuses almost exclusively on the complex nitrogenous organics that fuel algae growth and stress livestock. It has a minimal impact on trace elements, making it ideal for heavily planted tanks or reef systems.
3. Visual Exhaustion Indicator
The media provides real-time feedback. As it becomes saturated with organic matter, the beads transition from a light cream colour to a deep, dark brown. This eliminates guesswork regarding when the media requires attention.

Application and Dosing
Purigen is suitable for both marine and freshwater environments. For optimal performance, it must be placed in a high-flow area of the filtration system.
    • Containment: The beads are extremely small. They must be housed in a fine-mesh bag (180 microns or less), such as Seachem’s ‘The Bag’.
    • Placement: Use in a canister filter, media reactor, or the high-flow compartment of a sump.
    • Dosing: 250 mL of Purigen treats up to 1,000 litres (approximately 220 imperial gallons) for up to six months, depending on the biological load.

Regeneration Protocol
One of Purigen’s most cost-effective features is its ability to be regenerated. The following steps must be followed precisely to ensure safety for your livestock.
    1. Bleach Soak: Submerge the exhausted Purigen in a 1:1 solution of household bleach and water for 24 hours. Use a non-metallic container in a well-ventilated area. Use standard, non-scented, non-thickened bleach.
    2. Rinse: Rinse the bag thoroughly with fresh tap water until the slimy feel is gone.
    3. Dechlorination: Soak the bag for 8 hours in a solution containing 4 tablespoons of Seachem Prime (or an equivalent dechlorinator) per 250 mL of water.
    4. Buffering (Freshwater Only): For freshwater use, soak for an additional 4 hours in a solution containing 2 tablespoons of a buffer (such as Neutral Regulator) per 250 mL of water. This prevents potential pH fluctuations.
    5. Final Check: Ensure no chlorine odour remains. If a bleach smell persists, repeat the dechlorination step.

Safety and Storage
    • Fouling: Certain slime-coat products containing amine-based polymers can permanently foul Purigen and render it toxic during regeneration. If you have used such products, do not regenerate the media.
    • Dehydration: Do not allow Purigen to dry out completely, as this can shrink the pores and damage the polymer structure. Store it in a small amount of RO or distilled water when not in use.

💡 Key Point: Purigen is a preventative measure, not a cure for established high nitrates. It is most effective at stopping nitrate accumulation by capturing waste at the source.
