Silver Endler Guppy:

A Masterclass in High-Lustre Nano-Fish

In the British fishkeeping scene, the Silver Endler (a selectively bred variant of Poecilia wingei) has surged in popularity. It combines the wild, energetic spirit of the Venezuelan Endler with a sophisticated, metallic aesthetic that looks particularly striking against the lush greens of a planted “aquascape.”

While often confused with the common Fancy Guppy, the Silver Endler is a smaller, sleeker, and arguably more frantic inhabitant, making it the perfect candidate for the modern “nano” aquarium.

1. Origins and Taxonomy

The “True” Endler was originally collected by Professor John Endler in 1975 from the Laguna de Patos in Venezuela. The Silver Endler is a domestic strain, often categorised by enthusiasts into three “classes”:

• Class N: Wild-caught or direct descendants with documented provenance.

• Class P: Fish of unknown origin but appearing to be pure P. wingei.

• Class K: Hybrid crosses between Endlers and Fancy Guppies (Poecilia reticulata). Most Silver Endlers found in UK local fish stores (LFS) are Class K or P, bred specifically for that distinctive platinum sheen.

2. Physical Characteristics

The Silver Endler is defined by its high-reflectivity. Unlike the “Cobra” or “Peacock” variants, the Silver focuses on a monochrome, pearlescent palette.

• The Male: Small (approx. 2.5cm). They possess a vivid, metallic silver body that can appear almost white or blue-toned under high-intensity LED lighting. Many strains feature a “Swordtail” or “Double Sword” extension on the caudal fin, often tipped with black or neon highlights.

• The Female: Significantly larger (up to 4.5cm) and much more subtle. They generally lack the metallic silver of the males, appearing as a soft tan or olive colour, though premium “Silver” lines are beginning to show more pearlescence in females.

3. Water Parameters: The “UK Tap Water” Advantage

One of the reasons Endlers are so successful in the British hobby is their preference for harder water. Much of the UK (particularly the South and East) has “liquid rock” coming out of the taps—water that is high in minerals. While this is a nightmare for Discus keepers, it is paradise for Endlers.

4. Dietary Requirements

Silver Endlers are opportunistic omnivores. Because of their tiny mouths and high metabolism, they require frequent, small feedings.

• Dry Food: High-quality micro-pellets or crushed “tropical” flakes. Look for foods containing Spirulina to support their immune systems.

• Frozen/Live Food: They go into a frenzy for Cyclops, Daphnia, and newly hatched Brine Shrimp (Artemia).

• Algae: They are surprisingly good “cleaner” fish, constantly picking at biofilm and hair algae on plant leaves.

5. Habitat and Aquascaping

To see the Silver Endler at its best, the environment should provide contrast.

• Planting: Use dark green plants like Cryptocoryne wendtii or Java Moss. The silver bodies of the fish will “pop” against the dark background.

• Flow: They enjoy a moderate current. A standard internal filter provides enough flow for them to “surf” without being exhausted.

• Floating Plants: Species like Amazon Frogbit or Salvinia are highly recommended. They provide cover for the fish and a hunting ground for fry.

6. Breeding: The “Guppy Curve”

Be warned: Silver Endlers are incredibly prolific. If you have males and females together, you will have babies.

• Livebearers: Unlike most fish that lay eggs, Endlers give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry.

• Colony Management: If you don’t want to be overrun, consider an “All-Male” tank. Male Silver Endlers are peaceful toward one another and will display more vibrantly without the distraction of females.

• Hybridisation: If you are a purist, do not house them with Fancy Guppies. They will interbreed, resulting in “mutt” guppies that lose the sleek, diminutive charm of the Endler line.

7. The Verdict

The Pros:

• Hardiness: Extremely tolerant of the hard water found in most UK homes.

• Visual Impact: The metallic silver sheen is unmatched in the nano-fish world.

• Activity: They are “constant motion” fish, providing a lot of life to a small desk tank.

The Cons:

• Overpopulation: Without a plan, you can go from 5 fish to 50 in a matter of months.

• Short Lifespan: Like many small livebearers, they typically live only 2 to 3 years.
