Flagtail Prochilodus
A Comprehensive Guide:
Siver Flagtail Prochilodus (Semaprochilodus taeniurus) is a large, migratory, and social characin from the river basins of South America. It is a striking fish with a silver, streamlined body and a beautiful caudal (tail) fin adorned with alternating black and red or yellow bands, which gives the species its common name. They are highly active and play an important ecological role in their native habitat, making them a fascinating, albeit challenging, species for a dedicated aquarist.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: They are large, reaching up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length in captivity. Their body is a clean, reflective silver, often with faint horizontal stripes. Their most distinctive feature is the “flag-like” pattern on their tail fin.
- Temperament: They are generally peaceful towards other species of a similar size, but they can be aggressive towards their own kind, especially in smaller groups. They are best kept either as a single specimen or in a large school of six or more to diffuse aggression.
- Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 10 years or more.
Aquarium Requirements
Housing the Flagtail Prochilodus requires a significant commitment to tank size and maintenance due to their active nature and potential for large growth.
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 475 litres (125 gallons) is recommended for a small group. A wider and longer tank is far more beneficial than a tall one, as they need plenty of horizontal swimming space.
- Water Parameters: They are quite adaptable but thrive in clean, well-oxygenated water.
- Temperature: to ( to )
- pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH of to .
- Hardness: They can tolerate a wide range, but aim for a dH of to .
- Tank Setup: The aquarium should have a soft, sandy substrate and ample open space for swimming. Include large pieces of driftwood and smooth river rocks to provide cover and a more natural feel. Be aware that this species is primarily herbivorous and will actively graze on algae and biofilm. For this reason, live plants are not recommended as they will likely be eaten.
Diet and Feeding
In their natural habitat, Flagtail Prochilodus are omnivorous with a strong herbivorous preference, feeding on detritus, algae, and plant matter.
- Diet: Their diet in the aquarium should be primarily vegetable-based. High-quality spirulina flakes and sinking algae wafers should be the staple.
- Feeding: Supplement their diet with fresh vegetables such as blanched zucchini, spinach, or lettuce. You can also offer occasional protein-rich foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp, but these should be a small part of their overall diet.
Breeding and Compatibility
- Breeding: Breeding the Flagtail Prochilodus in a home aquarium is considered extremely difficult and has not been widely documented. They undergo a complex migratory spawning cycle in the wild, which is nearly impossible to replicate in captivity.
- Tank Mates: When selecting tank mates, choose other large, robust, and peaceful species. Good companions include large characins, catfish, or some of the more placid, larger cichlid species. Avoid housing them with any fish small enough to fit in their mouth or overly aggressive species. They are also known to be territorial towards similar-looking fish, so avoid keeping them with other Prochilodus species.
