- Origin: This species is found in the headwaters of the Sungai Amandit, a tributary in the Meratus mountain range of South Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo.

Their natural habitat consists of shallow, clear, and extremely fast-flowing mountain streams with a substrate of smooth, water-worn rocks, boulders, and sand. These streams are highly oxygenated, and the rocks are covered in a rich layer of biofilm and algae, which is the loaches’ primary food source.
2. Appearance
The Red Tail Hillstream Loach has a highly specialized, streamlined body adapted for life in strong currents. Its most notable features include:
- Body Shape: A flattened, hydrodynamic body with modified pectoral and pelvic fins that form a suction cup. This allows it to cling securely to smooth surfaces in powerful water flow.
- Colouration: The body features a dark brown to black mottled or striped pattern over a lighter base.
- Distinctive Tail: Its most defining characteristic is a vibrant red or orange caudal fin (tail), which provides a stunning contrast to its body.
- Size: They reach a maximum size of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5-6 cm).
3. Temperament and Social Behavior
Red Tail Hillstream Loaches are peaceful and social fish. They are best kept in groups of three or more, with five being an ideal number. Keeping them in a group encourages natural grazing behavior and reduces stress. While males may engage in minor territorial squabbles, this behavior is mostly posturing and rarely results in injury, especially if the tank is spacious with plenty of hiding spots.
4. Aquarium Setup
Replicating their natural riverine environment is the key to successfully keeping these loaches.
Tank Size
A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended for a small group. However, a longer and wider tank, such as a 130 litre tank, is preferable as it provides more surface area for grazing and establishing territories.
Substrate and Décor
- Substrate: Use a substrate of fine sand or smooth, rounded gravel to prevent injury to their delicate undersides.
- Rocks and Wood: The tank should be furnished with plenty of smooth, water-worn rocks, pebbles, and boulders. Flat stones are particularly important as they provide ideal surfaces for biofilm growth and for the loaches to graze on.
- Driftwood: Smooth driftwood can also be included to add complexity and more surfaces for grazing.
- Plants: While their natural habitat has few plants, hardy species like Anubias, Microsorum (Java Fern), and Crinum can be attached to rocks and driftwood. These plants can tolerate high flow and their leaves provide additional grazing surfaces.
Water Flow and Oxygenation
This is the most critical aspect of their care.
- High Flow: A strong, unidirectional water flow is essential. The water turnover rate should be at least 10-15 times the tank volume per hour. This is achieved by using one or more powerful filters and supplementing with powerheads or circulation pumps.
- High Oxygen: The vigorous water movement ensures the water is saturated with oxygen. An additional air stone can be used as a backup and to further increase surface agitation.
Filtration and Lighting
- Filtration: An oversized external canister filter or a large sponge filter (like a Mattenfilter) is recommended. The system must be well-established and biologically mature before adding the loaches, as they are sensitive to ammonia and nitrites.
- Lighting: Bright lighting is beneficial as it promotes the growth of algae and biofilm, which is their primary food source.

6. Diet and Feeding

- Primary Diet: A mature aquarium with abundant algae and biofilm is the best food source. Do not clean the algae off the rocks or tank sides (except the front viewing panel).
- Supplemental Foods: Their diet should be supplemented with high-quality foods.
- Sinking algae wafers
- Gel foods (e.g., Repashy Soilent Green)
- Blanched vegetables like spinach, kale, and cucumber.
- Occasional protein in the form of frozen or live bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Avoid a high-protein diet, as it can cause health issues.
7. Suitable Tank Mates
Due to their specific requirements, tank mates must be chosen carefully. They should be peaceful and thrive in similar high-flow, subtropical conditions.
