Slender Lionhead Cichlid (Steatocranus tinanti) is a rheophilic (current-loving) fish from the fast-flowing parts of the Congo River in Central Africa. Unlike many other cichlids, they are not highly territorial or aggressive, making them excellent candidates for a peaceful community tank. Their most notable feature is the fatty nuchal hump that develops on the heads of mature males, giving them a ‘lionhead’ appearance.

Key Characteristics

• Appearance: These fish have a streamlined, elongated body with a striking grey or tan colouration and a series of dark vertical bands. The most defining trait is the large, bulbous nuchal hump that develops on the forehead of adult males. They lack a functional swim bladder, which means they are not great swimmers and spend most of their time “hopping” along the substrate. They reach a maximum size of around 12 to 14 cm (4.7 to 5.5 inches).
• Temperament: They are exceptionally peaceful for a cichlid and are not known for digging or uprooting plants. However, males can become territorial during breeding. It’s best to keep them as a male-female pair or in a small group with a single male to prevent aggression.
• Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 8 to 10 years.

Aquarium Requirements

Replicating their natural fast-flowing, oxygen-rich river environment is key to keeping this species healthy.

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (40 gallons) is recommended for a pair or small group. A longer tank is preferable over a taller one, as they are bottom dwellers.
• Water Parameters: They are more adaptable to a range of water parameters than other cichlids, but a high oxygen content is vital.
  • Temperature: 24∘C to 28∘C (75∘F to 82∘F)
  • pH: They can tolerate a pH range of $6.0$ to $7.5$.
  • Hardness: They prefer soft to moderately hard water, with a dH of $5$ to $15$.
• Tank Setup: The aquarium should feature a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate. The most important aspect is to provide strong water flow using powerheads or filters that create a noticeable current. Decorate the tank with smooth rocks, caves, and driftwood to provide hiding and spawning spots. Live plants can be added, as they are not known to damage them.

Diet and Feeding

Steatocranus tinanti are omnivores and will readily accept a variety of foods.

• Diet: A balanced diet should include high-quality sinking cichlid pellets or flakes.
• Feeding: Supplement their diet with frequent feedings of live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and occasional tubifex. This helps to provide essential nutrients and encourages natural foraging behaviours.

Compatibility

Their peaceful nature makes them suitable for a wide range of community tanks.

• Good Tank Mates: They can be housed with other peaceful and moderately-sized fish. Good companions include various species of robust tetras, peaceful barbs, larger rasboras, and other rheophilic species from similar environments.
• Fish to Avoid: Avoid keeping them with aggressive or highly territorial cichlids that could bully them. Also, they are not suitable for tanks with small, timid fish that could be outcompeted for food or intimidated by their larger size.
