Splendid Dwarf Cichlid (Nanochromis splendens)
A Comprehensive Guide:
The Splendid Dwarf Cichlid (Nanochromis splendens) is a small, stunning cichlid from the soft, acidic, blackwater rivers of the Congo Basin in Central Africa. They are prized by aquarists for their iridescent sheen and secretive nature, making them a rewarding species to keep. They are best housed in a species-only or a very peaceful community tank.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: This species lives up to its name with a striking, iridescent appearance. Their body has a base colour of light grey to tan, but it is covered in a brilliant mix of blue, green, and purple iridescence, especially on their fins and face. Like other Nanochromis, they have distinct vertical bands. Males are larger and more slender with pointed fins, while females are smaller and rounder, often displaying a reddish or purple flush on their belly, especially when spawning. They grow to a maximum size of around 7 to 9 cm (2.8 to 3.5 inches).
- Temperament: They are generally peaceful and shy. However, a bonded pair will become territorial, especially when they are breeding. It’s highly recommended to keep them in a male-female pair as they can be aggressive towards their own kind outside of a paired bond.
- Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 5 to 8 years.
Aquarium Requirements
Recreating their natural habitat is crucial for the health and well-being of the Splendid Dwarf Cichlid.
- Tank Size: A minimum tank of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended for a single pair to allow for territorial separation and stability. A larger tank is always better for a more stable ecosystem.
- Water Parameters: They thrive in soft, acidic water, which is key to their vibrant colours and health.
- Temperature: to ( to )
- pH: A range of to is essential.
- Hardness: They require very soft water, with a dH of to .
- Tank Setup: The aquarium should be heavily furnished with a fine sand substrate. Provide plenty of natural hiding places using driftwood, roots, and rock formations. The addition of dried leaf litter (like oak or Indian almond leaves) will not only provide hiding spots but also help to naturally lower the pH and create a ‘blackwater’ effect that they are used to.
Diet and Feeding
Nanochromis splendens are omnivores and will accept a wide variety of foods.
- Diet: A varied diet of high-quality flake or pellet food should be the staple. Supplement this with frequent feedings of live and frozen foods.
- Feeding: Offer live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae, and occasional tubifex. This helps to provide a balanced diet and will encourage their natural foraging behaviours.
Compatibility
These fish are peaceful but can be easily intimidated by larger or more aggressive tank mates.
- Good Tank Mates: They can be kept with peaceful, small to medium-sized fish that prefer similar soft, acidic water conditions. Good companions include smaller tetras (like Cardinal or Rummy-nose Tetras), peaceful rasboras, and other small, bottom-dwelling fish such as Corydoras species.
- Fish to Avoid: Avoid any aggressive or large fish, as well as species with long flowing fins that could be nipped. You should also be cautious when mixing them with other dwarf cichlids.
