Spotted Tiger Loach (Lepidocephalus thermalis)
Care Guide
The Spotted Tiger Loach, sometimes referred to as the Thermal Loach, is a charming and highly peaceful bottom-dwelling fish originating from South Asia. Unlike many of the larger, boisterous loaches, this species is smaller and requires a specific habitat focused on fine, soft substrate, as its primary behaviour involves burrowing completely into the sand. They are excellent community fish, provided their environmental and social needs are met.
Key Characteristics and Origin
- Scientific Name: Lepidocephalus thermalis
- Origin: Found widely across the warm, slow-moving rivers and rice paddies of South Asia, particularly India and Sri Lanka.
- Maximum Size: Typically reaches (around to inches).
- Appearance: They possess an elongated, slender body typical of a loach, marked with a distinctive pattern of small dark spots and bars (which gives them the “tiger” name) over a pale, earthy background.
- Temperament: Extremely docile and non-aggressive. They are shy, mainly active at dawn, dusk, and night, and will spend much of the day buried.
Aquarium Environment and Setup
Creating a safe, deep, and soft substrate is the most critical element of the Spotted Tiger Loach’s habitat.
Tank Size and Filtration
- Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of ( UK gallons) is suitable for a small group of individuals. Priority should be given to the tank’s footprint (length and width) rather than its height.
- Filtration: Standard internal or external canister filtration is fine, but the flow rate should be gentle, as they prefer calm or slow-moving water.
- Aeration: Good water surface movement is required to maintain high dissolved oxygen levels.
Substrate and Decor (Essential)
- Substrate: This is non-negotiable—you must use a deep layer ( or more) of fine, soft sand (such as play sand or pool filter sand). Gravel or coarse substrates can injure their delicate barbels and skin as they burrow.
- Decor: Provide ample sheltered areas using smooth river stones, driftwood, and dense planting. Floating plants are highly beneficial as they diffuse the light, encouraging the loaches to be more active during daylight hours.
- Safety: Ensure all decor, especially rocks, is stable and does not pose a risk of crushing the loaches when they burrow underneath them.
Water Parameters
This species tolerates a relatively wide range of conditions but prefers slightly soft and acidic to neutral water. Stability is key.

| Temperature | () |
| pH | (Slightly acidic to neutral) |
| Hardness (GH/KH) | Soft to Moderate () |
Diet and Feeding
The Spotted Tiger Loach is an omnivorous scavenger that feeds primarily on micro-organisms, insect larvae, and detritus found in the substrate.
- Social Grouping: They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least four to six individuals. Kept alone, they become stressed, shy, and inactive.
- Staple Diet: High-quality sinking tablets, granules, or sinking wafers.
- Supplementation: Their diet should be supplemented with live or frozen foods, such as bloodworms, tubifex, daphnia, and brine shrimp. This is crucial for their health and colouration.
- Feeding Strategy: Since they are nocturnal and slow feeders, ensure food reaches the bottom, particularly after the main lights have been switched off, to give them a chance to feed before other tank inhabitants consume everything.
Compatibility and Behaviour
Due to their peaceful nature and vulnerability when buried, tank mate selection is important.
- Suitable Tank Mates: Any peaceful, medium-sized, top-to-mid-dwelling fish that are not aggressive and cannot fit the loach into their mouths. Good options include:
- Small, peaceful Tetras (e.g., Cardinal or Neon Tetras)
- Rasboras and Danios
- Peaceful Gourami species
- Non-aggressive Catfish (e.g., Corydoras species, which occupy a similar niche but don’t burrow).
- Avoid: Large, aggressive cichlids, fin-nippers (like Tiger Barbs), or other powerful bottom-dwellers that might compete too fiercely for food or attempt to eat the loaches.
The health of your loaches can often be determined by their behaviour; if they are frequently buried and occasionally emerge to “patrol” the tank bottom, they are comfortable and secure in their environment.
