Farlowella cf. vittata (The Twig Catfish)

Species Profile:

If there were an Olympic gold medal for “Hide and Seek,” the Twig Catfish (Farlowella cf. vittata) would retire the trophy. This remarkable creature is one of nature’s finest examples of mimicry; to the casual observer, it is nothing more than a stray bit of sunken wood. To the aquarist, however, it is a fascinating, prehistoric-looking addition to a peaceful community tank.

Native to the Orinoco and Amazon basins, the Twig Catfish is as delicate as it looks—requiring a dedicated keeper who understands that “low maintenance” does not apply here.

Vital Statistics

Appearance: The Living Stick

The Farlowella is defined by its incredibly slender, elongated body and a protruding snout (rostrum).

• The Body: Covered in bony “scutes” rather than scales, typically a mottled brown or tan with two dark lateral stripes running from the snout to the tail.

• Sexual Dimorphism: Males develop “odontodes” (small, hair-like bristles) along the sides of their snouts as they mature—essentially a very thin, very strange moustache.

Specialist Care Requirements

The Twig Catfish is notoriously sensitive. They do not tolerate “new” tanks or fluctuating water parameters.

1. Oxygen and Flow

These fish hail from flowing waters. They require highly oxygenated water with a decent amount of surface agitation. If your Twig Catfish is constantly sitting near the filter outlet, it may be a sign that the rest of the tank lacks sufficient oxygen.

2. The “Starvation” Risk

This is the most common pitfall for new keepers. Farlowella are specialized algae eaters (Aufwuchs feeders). They are slow, methodical, and easily outcompeted for food.

• The Diet: They must have a constant supply of natural algae. Supplement this with blanched courgette (zucchini), spinach, and high-quality spirulina wafers.

• The Wood: You must provide natural bogwood. They spend a vast amount of time rasping on wood surfaces to aid their digestion.

3. Tank Mates (Choose Wisely)

Because they are so placid and slow-moving, they should never be kept with “nippy” or overly aggressive fish.

• Compatible: Rust Catfish (O. rabauti), small Tetras, and Hatchetfish.

• Avoid: Large Cichlids, Barbs (except perhaps the more peaceful Melon Barb), or anything that might mistake their long, thin tail for a snack.

Maintenance with your Superfish Scissors

A Delicate Balance: Twig Catfish love to rest on the broad leaves of plants like Amazon Swords or Anubias. However, they need a clear path to navigate. Use your Superfish Plant Scissors to trim away dying leaves or overhanging stems that might “trap” or stress the fish as it moves. Because they are so thin, they can easily get wedged in dense thickets of unkempt plants.

A Warning for the Unwary

The “Stick” Test: Before you throw away any “dead” plant matter or trim your aquarium’s hardscape, double-check that your Farlowella isn’t currently pretending to be a twig on that specific branch. Their camouflage is so effective that many keepers have accidentally removed their fish during a particularly vigorous cleaning session!
