Care Guide (Nigerian Strain)

The Kribensis (often shortened to Krib) is a highly popular and relatively hardy dwarf cichlid originating from West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Cameroon. The Nigerian wild-type strain is distinguished by its generally larger size and sometimes more intense red/maroon belly colouration in breeding females compared to commercially bred lines. They are noted for their exceptional parental behaviour and adaptability.

Key Characteristics and Temperament

• Size: Males typically reach $9\text{ to }10\text{ cm}$ ($\approx 3.5\text{ to }4\text{ inches}$); females are smaller, usually $6\text{ to }7\text{ cm}$.
• Appearance: Both sexes feature dark lateral lines, but the female displays a brilliant, deep cherry-red or maroon belly, which intensifies significantly when ready to spawn. Males have more pointed fins and often brighter, more varied colouration.
• Temperament: Generally peaceful, but they are extremely territorial when protecting eggs or fry. They are cave-spawners and will fiercely defend the area around their chosen spawning site against all intruders.
• Recommended Grouping: Best kept as a bonded, monogamous pair. Once a pair forms, it is advisable to rehome any extra fish.
• Lifespan: $5\text{ to }8$ years in optimal conditions.

Water Parameters and Quality

Nigerian P. pulcher are found in habitats ranging from brackish estuaries to clear forest streams, making them more adaptable than many South American dwarf cichlids. However, stable water is crucial.

• Temperature: 24∘C to 26∘C (75∘F to 79∘F).
• pH Level (Acidity): They thrive in neutral to slightly acidic conditions, with an ideal range of $6.5$ to $7.5$. For breeding, a $\text{pH}$ closer to the acidic side is preferred.
• Hardness ($\text{GH}$): Tolerates a wide range, from soft to moderately hard ($5\text{ to }15\text{ dH}$).
• Maintenance: Perform weekly water changes of $25\%$. While tolerant of a wider range, they are still cichlids and require low nitrate levels.

Aquarium Setup and Environment

The environment should focus on creating secure, defined territories and plenty of hiding places.

• Tank Size: A minimum of $75\text{ litres}$ ($\approx 20\text{ gallons}$) is required for a single pair to ensure adequate territory space.
• Substrate: Sand or fine smooth gravel is suitable. They enjoy sifting substrate and moving it to clear a space around their cave entrance.
• Décor (Spawning Focus):
  • Spawning Caves: Provide several dark, secluded, single-entrance caves. Terracotta pots turned on their side, ceramic logs, or half-coconut shells are ideal.
  • Wood and Roots: Use large pieces of driftwood and root structures to break up sightlines, which helps define territories and reduces stress.
  • Plants: Heavily plant the aquarium, especially the edges and background, using hardy species such as Java Fern and Anubias.
• Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient.

Diet and Feeding Requirements

Kribensis are omnivores and will accept a wide variety of foods. A balanced diet is necessary for rich colouration and vigour.

• Staple Diet: High-quality flake food or sinking pellets. Ensure food is sinking, as Kribs spend most of their time near the bottom.
• Vegetable Matter: They require vegetable content. Offer Spirulina flakes, or fresh, blanched vegetables like courgette (zucchini) or shelled peas.
• Protein Supplements: Feed frozen or live foods regularly, such as brine shrimp (artemia), daphnia, and bloodworms. This is vital for conditioning breeding pairs.
• Feeding Frequency: Feed small portions twice a day.

Compatibility

• Suitable Tank Mates: Peaceful, mid-to-upper dwelling species that are too fast to be caught and won’t compete for the substrate. Good options include Tetras, Congo Tetras, Hatchetfish, and small, peaceful schooling fish.
• Avoid: Other territorial dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma or Rams), large or aggressive fish, and very slow-moving fish that might become targets during breeding cycles. Peaceful catfish or small plecos can sometimes work, but watch closely for competition over cave space.
