Gold Lyretail Killifish (Aphyosemion australe var. ‘Gold’):
Care Guide:
The Gold Lyretail Killifish (Aphyosemion australe “Gold”) is an exceptionally breathtaking freshwater fish. Notably, this brilliant variety is a selectively bred colour morph derived from the wild Cape Lopez Killifish of West Africa. It stands out because of its vivid, fiery orange body covered in intricate red speckles. Consequently, it represents a highly prized jewel among domestic aquarium hobbyists.
Tank Size and Temperament
In captivity, these elegant fish grow to a maximum length of roughly 5 to 6 centimetres. Consequently, a single pair can live comfortably in a moderate nano aquarium. Because they are generally peaceful but can be slightly timid, they thrive best in quiet environments. Therefore, you should avoid housing them with large or aggressive tankmates that might easily intimidate them.
Ideal Aquarium Water Parameters
Maintaining stable water conditions is highly beneficial for their long-term health and vibrant coloration. Because their wild ancestors hail from slow-moving coastal streams and swamps, they prefer gentle environmental conditions. The optimal water parameters include:
- Acidity Range: A stable pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
- Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2–10 dGH).
- Temperature Range: Kept consistently between 21°C and 24°C.
- Filtration: Gentle biological filtration to avoid strong currents.
Structural Tank Layout and Decor
Furthermore, the physical arrangement of the aquarium must replicate their natural shaded habitats. Incorporating plenty of live plants, such as Java moss and floating species, is highly recommended. Additionally, a tightly fitted lid is absolutely mandatory because these sleek fish are notorious, highly agile jumpers. If you provide ample shady retreats, they will display their most confident behaviours.
Dietary Habits and Nutrition
In terms of nutrition, they are primarily carnivores that feed on tiny invertebrates near the water surface. Although they can occasionally be trained to accept high-quality crushed flakes, live or frozen foods are highly preferred. Specifically, their daily feeding routine should regularly incorporate:
- Nutritious live or frozen baby brineshrimp (Artemia).
- High-protein frozen bloodworms or daphnia.
- Live wingless fruit flies or micro-worms.
Captive Breeding Behaviour
Finally, breeding this magnificent non-annual variety in captivity is a deeply fascinating and rewarding project. They are dedicated egg-mops spawners, meaning females will deposit their sticky eggs onto fine-leafed plants or artificial yarn. Following spawning, the parents do not tend to the clutch and may predate on the spawn. As a result, breeders must collect the eggs daily to hatch them safely in separate containers.
