Hoplisoma schultzei ‘Black’:
A Comprehensive Overview
Hoplisoma schultzei ‘Black’, commonly known as the Black Corydoras or Black Venezuelan Corydoras, is a popular and striking colour morph of Hoplisoma schultzei (formerly Corydoras schultzei), a species of freshwater fish belonging to the family Callichthyidae. While its exact wild origin is debated, the base species is native to South America, particularly the Amazon basin. This peaceful and active bottom-dweller is cherished by aquarists for its uniform dark colouration and its engaging, social behaviour, making it an excellent choice for community aquariums.
Taxonomy and Classification
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Chordata
- Class: Actinopterygii
- Order: Siluriformes
- Family: Callichthyidae (Armoured Catfishes)
- Genus: Hoplisoma (formerly Corydoras)
- Species: Hoplisoma schultzei (‘Black’ variant)
While traditionally classified under the genus Corydoras, recent phylogenetic studies have led to the reclassification of several species, including H. schultzei, into the genus Hoplisoma. The “Black” variant is a selectively bred colour morph, not a distinct wild species, known for its deep, uniform dark pigmentation.
Habitat and Distribution
While the ‘Black’ variant of Hoplisoma schultzei is a captive-bred strain, its wild ancestors are found in various river systems within the Amazon basin in South America. Their natural habitats typically consist of slow-moving rivers, streams, and floodplains with a substrate of fine sand or leaf litter. These environments are usually well-oxygenated, and the water parameters are generally soft and acidic to neutral, with temperatures ranging from 22-26°C (72-79°F).
Physical Characteristics
The Black Corydoras is a small and robust fish, usually reaching an adult size of approximately 5-6 cm (2-2.4 inches) in total length. Its most distinctive feature is its deep, uniform dark colouration.
Key physical characteristics include:
- Body Shape: Stocky and compact, with a flattened ventral surface, typical of Hoplisoma species. The body is covered in overlapping bony plates, providing protection.
- Colouration: A consistent deep black or very dark grey across the entire body, with no distinct patterns or spots. This uniform dark colour is its defining characteristic.
- Fins: Typically dark, matching the body colouration.
- Barbels: Possesses a pair of sensitive barbels around its mouth, used for foraging in the substrate.
Diet and Feeding
In its natural habitat, Hoplisoma schultzei is an omnivorous bottom-feeder, sifting through the substrate for small invertebrates, insect larvae, and detritus. In an aquarium setting, they are unfussy eaters and will readily accept a variety of sinking foods.
Suitable foods include:
- Sinking Pellets/Wafers: High-quality sinking catfish pellets or wafers should form the staple of their diet.
- Frozen Foods: Frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia are excellent protein supplements.
- Live Foods: Live microworms, grindal worms, and small insect larvae are eagerly accepted and can help condition them for breeding.
- Vegetables: They may occasionally graze on blanched vegetables like zucchini or cucumber, though this is not their primary food source.
It’s important to ensure food reaches the bottom of the tank, as they are not competitive feeders with faster-moving mid-water fish.
Behaviour and Temperament
The Black Corydoras is a peaceful, social, and active species. They are highly gregarious and thrive when kept in groups of at least 6-8 individuals, and ideally more. Keeping them in larger groups encourages their natural shoaling behaviour, reduces stress, and allows them to display their full range of behaviours. They are constantly sifting through the substrate, making them entertaining to watch. They are an excellent choice for community aquariums with other similarly sized, peaceful fish that occupy the mid to upper water columns.
Reproduction
Hoplisoma schultzei are egg-scatterers and are relatively easy to breed in captivity, often spawning after a cool water change that mimics a rain event.
- Spawning: Females lay adhesive eggs, typically on broad-leaved plants, tank glass, or decor, which the male then fertilises. Spawning can occur over several hours.
- Parental Care: There is no parental care; adults may predate on eggs and fry.
- Fry Care: Eggs usually hatch within 3-5 days, and the fry become free-swimming a few days later. The fry are tiny and initially require infusoria or liquid fry food, gradually moving to baby brine shrimp and micro-pellets as they grow. A separate breeding tank is recommended for successful rearing.
Conservation Status
As a selectively bred aquarium strain, the ‘Black’ variant of Hoplisoma schultzei does not have a wild conservation status. Its existence is entirely due to human cultivation within the aquarium hobby. The wild Hoplisoma schultzei species faces various threats in its natural habitats, similar to other Amazonian fish, including deforestation and pollution. Responsible collection practices and the development of sustainable aquaculture are crucial for the long-term viability of the wild species.
Aquarium Care
For aquarists interested in keeping Black Corydoras, here are some essential care guidelines:
- Tank Size: A minimum of 40 litres (10 gallons) for a small group (6-8 fish). Larger tanks are always beneficial for stability and to accommodate their active nature.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 22-26°C (72-79°F)
- pH: 6.0-7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Hardness: 2-10 dGH (soft to moderately soft)
- Filtration: Good filtration is essential to maintain high water quality, but strong currents should be avoided as they prefer calmer areas for foraging.
- Substrate: A fine, soft sand substrate is crucial to protect their delicate barbels as they forage. Avoid sharp gravel.
- Decor: Provide plenty of hiding spots in the form of driftwood, smooth rocks, and dense planting. Leaf litter (e.g., Indian almond leaves) can also be beneficial in replicating a blackwater environment.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is generally suitable.
- Tank Mates: Excellent tank mates include other peaceful, similarly sized community fish that occupy the mid to upper water columns, such as small tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful bottom-dwellers. Avoid housing them with large, aggressive, or overly boisterous species.
- Maintenance: Regular weekly water changes (25-30%) are crucial for maintaining pristine water quality, which is vital for their health and to prevent fin rot or other diseases.
By providing a stable, well-maintained environment with appropriate water parameters and a varied diet, the Black Corydoras can be a delightful and engaging addition to a freshwater aquarium.
