Ceylon Killifish (Aplocheilus dayi)

• Scientific Name: Aplocheilus dayi (Steindachner, 1892).
• Common Name: Ceylon Killifish, Day’s Panchax, Green Panchax.
• Maximum Size: Males reach approximately 7–9 cm (2.8–3.5 inches); females are slightly smaller at 5–7 cm.
• Lifespan: 3–5 years with proper care.
• Temperament: A peaceful but predatory surface-dweller; males may be territorial towards one another.

• Security: Like most panchax, they are prolific jumpers. A tight-fitting lid is essential.
• Water Conditions: While adaptable, they appreciate clean water with minimal current. A sponge filter or low-flow internal filter is ideal.
• Decor: Use floating plants (e.g., Salvinia or Pistia) to provide cover and diffuse light. Dense perimeter planting and driftwood help mimic their natural shaded habitat.

• Live Foods: They thrive on bloodworms, daphnia, fruit flies (Drosophila), and mosquito larvae.
• Prepared Foods: They generally accept high-quality floating flakes or small pellets, though wild-caught specimens may initially require live food to settle.

1. Spawning: They prefer to deposit eggs in fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops.
2. Ratio: A ratio of one male to two females is recommended to maximise egg production and reduce stress on the females.
3. Incubation: Eggs are fairly large and take 11–14 days to hatch at 25°C.
4. Fry Care: Newly hatched fry can immediately consume brine shrimp nauplii or microworms. Note that larger fry are known to be cannibalistic toward smaller siblings, so regular grading is required.

• Suitable Mates: Peaceful community fish such as Corydoras catfish, rasboras, and medium-sized tetras.
• Avoid: Any small fish (e.g., fry or tiny tetras) that can fit into their surprisingly large mouths. They may also nip the fins of slow-moving, long-finned species like fancy guppies.

We use a licensed courier to deliver your fish directly to you door and will be with you by 1pm the next day.
