Description

 (Cyrtocara moorii), often referred to as the “Dolphin Hap”, is a distinctive freshwater fish native to the sandy shallow waters of Lake Malawi and Lake Malombe in East Africa. It is highly prized by aquarists for its vibrant blue colouration and the unique “nuchal hump” that develops on its forehead as it matures, giving it a profile remarkably similar to a dolphin.

• Adult Size: Typically 20–25 cm (approx. 8–10 inches), though males can occasionally reach 30 cm.
• Lifespan: 8–12 years on average, potentially up to 15 years with optimal care.
• Temperament: Relatively peaceful for a Malawi cichlid, though they can be territorial during spawning.

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 200 to 300 litres (roughly 4 to 5 feet in length) is recommended for a small group. For full-grown adults, a 6-foot tank (approx. 450–500 litres) is ideal to provide sufficient swimming space.
• Water Parameters:
  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F).
  • pH Level: Hard, alkaline water is essential, ideally between 7.5 and 8.6.
  • Substrate: Use coral sand or aragonite. This mimics their natural environment and helps naturally buffer the water to maintain high alkalinity.
• Decor: Provide some rockwork at the back or sides for hiding, but ensure the centre of the tank remains open for swimming.

• Feeding: They are omnivores that lean towards high-protein foods.
• Recommended Foods: High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes should be the staple. Supplement with frozen or live treats such as brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp, krill.

• Group Ratio: They are best kept in a “harem” of one male to three or more females to distribute the male’s attention and reduce stress.
• Tank Mates: Suitable companions include other relatively peaceful Lake Malawi cichlids, such as Yellow Labs (Labidochromis caeruleus) or other Haplochromis and Aulonocara (Peacock) species.
• Caution: Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive “Mbuna” species or fish small enough to be eaten, as the Blue Dolphin will consume anything that fits in its mouth.
