A Guide to: L14 Sunshine Pleco (Scobinancistrus aureatus)
L14 Sunshine Pleco is a striking and sought-after freshwater fish, prized for its brilliant yellow spots and dark body. Its scientific name, Scobinancistrus aureatus, alludes to its “golden” appearance. This pleco is a beautiful addition to any large, peaceful aquarium and is known for its relatively shy and docile nature.
Natural Habitat & Appearance
Native to the Rio Xingu and Rio Iriri in Brazil, the L14 Sunshine Pleco inhabits fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters. It typically seeks refuge among rocky crevices, submerged tree roots, and driftwood.
As a juvenile, the fish has a deep black or dark brown body covered in bright, contrasting yellow-to-orange spots. As it matures, the body colour may lighten slightly, and the spots can become more vibrant. An adult can reach up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length, so it requires a large aquarium to thrive.
Tank Requirements
- Tank Size: A minimum of 250 litres (66 gallons) is recommended for a single adult. The larger the tank, the better, as this provides ample space for territories and reduces aggression.
- Water Conditions:
- Temperature: ()
- pH:
- Hardness: Soft to medium hard water
- Filtration: A high-quality filter is essential. The L14 requires clean, well-oxygenated water, so a powerful canister filter or multiple hang-on-back filters are a good choice. Adding a powerhead can help increase water flow, mimicking its natural river environment.
- Substrate & Decor: Use a fine sand or smooth gravel substrate. The most crucial element of the tank décor is the provision of ample hiding places. A variety of driftwood, slate, and rock formations should be used to create caves and crevices. This pleco is a “cave dweller” and will become stressed without places to hide.
Diet & Feeding
Unlike many plecos that are primarily algae-eaters, the L14 Sunshine Pleco is an omnivore with a strong preference for protein-rich foods.
- Primary Diet: Sinking pellets or wafers specifically designed for carnivores or omnivores.
- Supplements: Offer a variety of foods to ensure a balanced diet. This can include:
- Frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and Mysis shrimp.
- Fresh vegetables such as courgette, shelled peas, and cucumber, blanched to soften them.
- Feeding Habits: Feed once a day, preferably at night, as they are nocturnal. Ensure food reaches the bottom of the tank, where the pleco can find it easily.
Tank Mates & Compatibility
The L14 Sunshine Pleco is generally peaceful and can be kept with a wide range of community fish.
- Suitable Tank Mates:
- Large, peaceful cichlids (e.g., Angelfish, Severums)
- Large tetras and rasboras
- Barbs (excluding fin-nippers)
- Gouramis
- Incompatible Tank Mates: Avoid keeping the L14 with other large, aggressive bottom dwellers or other plecos, as they may become territorial. Keeping multiple L14s in the same tank can lead to fighting unless the tank is very large and provides numerous hiding spots to define territories.
Breeding
Breeding the L14 Sunshine Pleco in a home aquarium is challenging but not impossible. They are cave spawners, with the male guarding the eggs.
- Breeding Triggers: A significant change in water parameters, such as a large, cool water change, can often trigger spawning behaviour.
- Spawning Site: A male will select and clean a cave, luring a female inside to lay her eggs.
- Parental Care: The male will guard and fan the eggs with his fins for about a week until they hatch. He will continue to care for the fry for several days after they become free-swimming.
