Phoenix Rasbora (Boraras merah):

Species Overview & Care Guide:

The Phoenix Rasbora, scientifically known as Boraras merah, is a breathtaking, ultra-nano freshwater fish native to the blackwater swamps and streams of Southern Borneo, Indonesia. Often sought after by aquascapers and nano-tank enthusiasts, this species is highly prized for its striking fiery-red coloration, miniature size, and peaceful demeanor.

Species Quick Facts

Parameter Specification
Scientific Name Boraras merah
Common Names Phoenix Rasbora, Merah Rasbora
Adult Size    1.5 – 2.0 cm (0.6 – 0.8 inches)
Temperament Peaceful, timid, schooling fish
Lifespan 3 – 5 years with optimal care

Ideal Water Parameters

In the wild, Boraras merah inhabits sluggish, tannin-rich blackwater streams. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so a mature, well-cycled aquarium is mandatory.

  • Temperature: 68F to 82F (20C to 28C)

  • pH Range: 4.5 – 6.5 (Strictly prefers acidic, soft water)

  • Water Hardness: 1 – 5 dGH

Tank Setup & Habitat Mimicry

Visual Distinction: Boraras merah is frequently confused with its close relative, Boraras brigittae (Chili Rasbora). While the Chili Rasbora has a solid, continuous dark stripe down its side, the Phoenix Rasbora (merah) features a broken, blotchy dark stripe surrounded by a vibrant orange-red halo.

  • The Power of Tannins: To bring out their deepest fiery reds, introduce dried Indian Almond Leaves (Catappa leaves), alder cones, or driftwood. These release beneficial tannins that naturally lower pH and tint the water a tea-color, making the fish feel secure.

  • Schooling Behavior: These are tight schooling fish that feel stress in small numbers. Keep them in a group of at least 8 to 10 individuals (15+ is ideal) to witness their natural behaviors and vibrant coloration.

  • Aquascaping: Use dense live plants like Java Moss, Anubias, and Cryptocorynes, alongside floating plants (like Frogbit or Salvinia) to diffuse bright aquarium lighting, which can otherwise make them timid.

Diet & Feeding

Because of their minuscule size, Boraras merah are micropredators requiring microscopic foods. Their diet should be varied to enhance their coloration:

  1. Prepared Foods: High-quality micro-pellets or crushed flakes rich in carotenoids (color enhancers).

  2. Live & Frozen Foods: Baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), Daphnia, Moina, Cyclops, and banana worms.

  3. Feeding Schedule: Feed small amounts once or twice daily. Ensure food particles are small enough to fit into their tiny mouths.

Tank Mates & Compatibility

Due to their fragile size, they should never be housed with larger, boisterous, or predatory fish.

  • Excellent Companions: Other micro-rasboras, Neon/Ember Tetras, Pygmy Corydoras, Otocinclus Catfish, and peaceful Kuhli Loaches.

  • Shrimp Safe: They are among the safest fish to keep with Neocaridina (Cherry Shrimp) and Caridina shrimp. While they might opportunistically eat a brand-new shrimplet, they are generally too small to do any harm to the colony.

⚠️ Warning

Like most nano fish, Phoenix Rasboras are agile jumpers when startled. Always secure your aquarium with a tight-fitting lid or a fine mesh cover.
