• • Temperature: 22°C to 26°C is optimal.
  • pH Range: 6.5–7.5.
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (5–12 dGH).
  • Aquarium Size: Minimum 40 litres for a pair; larger volumes are required for groups.

• • Substrate: Use a soft, sandy substrate to prevent injury to their bellies.
  • Hiding Places: Provide plenty of caves, terracotta pipes, or hollow logs, which are essential for territory and spawning.
  • Vegetation: Utilise dense live planting, including floating species, to mimic their natural shaded habitats.
  • Filtration: Ensure efficient filtration with low to moderate water flow, as they dislike strong currents.

• • Peacock Gudgeons are primarily carnivores and can sometimes be finicky eaters.
  • Primary Diet: Offer high-quality frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and tubifex.
  • Alternative Diet: They can occasionally be conditioned to accept high-protein micro-granules or flakes, though this should not be their sole food source.

• • Community: Highly compatible with other peaceful, similarly sized species like tetras, rasboras, and corydoras.
  • Conspecific Behaviour: Generally peaceful but males can display mild territorial behaviour over caves, especially during spawning.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Males develop a distinct nuchal hump on their heads and are larger, while females feature a bright yellow belly and a black edge on their anal fin when ready to breed.

• • They are secretive cave spawners.
  • The female deposits eggs inside a tight cave or pipe, and the male fertilises them.
  • The male drives the female away post-spawning and single-handedly guards and fanned the eggs until they hatch, which usually takes 4–5 days.
